I think he is saying that the engine is character-driven. The different super villains have different motivations, so even working together provides a level of conflict that super hero team books can't touch.

Despite the interpersonal problems in X-Men or Avengers, they'll never come to serious group-destroying blows the way that Doom and Namor did.

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that after Storm defeated Cyclops for leadership of the X-Men, he went and founded X-Factor for the express purpose of destroying Storm's team. That would be so wildly out of character for both of them that even a Portacio drawn mega crossover wouldn't sell.

But, after Doom and Namor's alliance ended it was natural and entertaining for the two to battle each other.

John: I've never said so, but I'm loving these essays. I'm the chief editor for the Fellowship of the White Star role playing campaign, and every week you teach me something about open ended storytelling that makes my job more fun. Sometimes easier, sometimes harder, but always more interesting and enjoyable.

Yes, and they'll be out of order, so as to spoil important plot points in future installments.

Now to do another 52, only in reverse order and not nearly as good!

Does this mean there will be spin-offs?

Congratulations on the success of this installment.

It's actually pretty interesting to read and analyse the inner-workings of the comics we read and love...
