I'm glad I'm not the only one who was worried about the short-term prospects for Blue Beetle from this issue. Thanks for clearing that up!

LSH felt *too* new to me. I don't mind Legion reboots, but for something that's not supposed to be a reboot, it felt like a *really* abrupt change in tone, look, dialog, subplots, etc. I understand that the end of the Supergirl era and the beginning of a new writer should be a jumping-on point-- but I wish they had kept continuity of artist or at least of style. I associate each era of the Legion with a particular look for the future, and this doesn't look like what we've seen before. (I also wish Shooter showed evidence of having heard actual teenaged dialog in the past thirty years, or of having 'heard' the way the characters talked in the book for the past 3.)

Spot on review of Giant-Size Avengers. Not worth the money, but cute.

(Side note, has anyone noticed Jim Cheung does the John Byrne thing where male and female characters essentially have the same face? And somehow, it still works?)

The quasi-reboot of Legion of Super-Heroes was solid. It respects the Waid/Kitson re-imagining while bringing the book back to its roots (Karate Kid is sporting the Giant Yellow Collar again, for one thing). I also don't expect the character who "died" to stay dead for long.

Messiah Complex is still just treading water for me. People complain about nothing happening in Countdown? This supposedly earth-shattering x-over has done little except chase Cable around for nine issues. A situation which is only compelling *if we know why Cable's running* ... otherwise, WTF's the point?

"The Avengers teach Spider-Man some respect because he jokes around too much"?

That sounds so, so fucking bad, it almost beggars belief.

I'm not sure, Tim. I know I've added Blue Beetle and Iron Fist to my pull list after the first issues were long gone, but it just seems like there are a lot of titles premiering that I think look cool. Confound those creators! I'll probably do a quick non-scientific look at the weekly purchases when I go back and do a "best-of" post.

Maybe Bishop has been a Skrull SINCE the Lobdell run!

Greg: My overall sense is that your weekly comic book buying has doubled since you started asking for reader suggestions. I'm not going to go back and actually check, but I remember thinking, when you started this whole thing: "Greg buys way less comics than I do," and now I think "Greg buys almost as many comics as I do." I know you don't buy everything you write about here, but has your weekly purchase amount increased substantially, or what?

"Plus, I don’t remember if it was in a book or from the X Men cartoon, but I somehow remember learning what that tattoo means on Bishops eye and how he got it. I don’t think it had anything to do with prison camps though."

My recollection from the cartoon was that the "M" stood for "Mutant". But I can't remember whether he got it when he was put into a camp, or when he joined whatever the future rebel/resistance version of the "X-Men" was.

Bishop got his current costume when Bachalo briefly took over the art for Claremont's Uncanny after Decimation, in #466-468. (That's also when Cannonball got his current costume.)

Bishop's current statu quo is that he's very chummy with the O*N*E (the agency responsible for the Sentinels "protecting" the X-Mansion), as shown again in Claremont's post-Decimation Uncanny, X-Men: the 198, and Civil War: X-Men.

I, for one, see no problem with his current characterization. He was originally introduced as an X-Treme "shoot first, ask questions later" cop from the future, so his association with the O*N*E made sense.
Moreover, this is a character who has been directionless for more than a decade. So setting him up as Cable's antagonist is a good decision which fits nicely : he's someone from a different alternate future whose agenda conflicts with Cable. I'm surprised that the two of them have barely interacted in the past, since there is certainly a lot of potential in here.

Yeah, Kody and Josh, I didn't make a big enough point about how much content you get in Punks. It is a lot meatier than your typical comic book. I'm still not sure why I didn't get the first issue. I remember seeing it, but for some reason I didn't buy it. Now I'll have to go find it!

"I think I can tell a few places, but I guess Gaudiano’s inking helps blend the two styles. It’s kind of neat, actually, to see the influence an inker can have."

That's one of the things that kind of bothered me when I returned to reading comics after 15 years away: inkers really have no personality anymore. I don't know if it's the printing process, or the fancy colouring these days, but when I was a kid, you could tell something that was inked by Tom Palmer, or Joe Rubenstein, or Kyle Baker, or Joe Sinott, or Klaus Janson, or Sal Buscema, or Bob Wiack, or Dan Green, or P. Craig Russell, or Vince Colletta, etc. Now it's straight, non-descript line work. It wasn't until the Lee Weeks DD fill-in, inked by Gaudiano, that I realised somebody was actually allowed to exhibit an actual style with their inks.

» What I bought - 28 December 2007 Fialkov is obviously having a blast writing almost stream-of-consciousness stuff, and Chamberlain uses random pictures smashed together to give it a dream-like feel (check out the cover for an example).
This Bishop is TOTALLY a Skrull! The uniform he is wearing is the uniform from when Scott Lobdell finished his first run with the X-Men back in the mid to late 90s...and the time period in which Bishop was wearing uniform also coincides with a time period when a team of X-Men wound up not only lost in space, but thrown back in time to see the Skrulls preparing for an invasion of Earth...RIGHT before Galactus devoured their homeworld.

I will NOT be surprised if that's a Skrull right there!

Thanks for the Punks review, Greg!

And, to add to Kody's point the Christmas Special is a full-to-bursting 56 pages for 4.99, four whole pages over the solicited length.

We want to make sure those five bucks get you more than your moneys worth.

Hey, thanks for checking out PUNKS!

But FYI, the first issue is a 48 pages of pure content, not 22 like a regular comic, and there are no ads.

X MEN SPOILERS BELOW

Bishop is a skrull.

There's no other explaination. It would work with his recent very out of character attitude as of recently. After seeing how he was written in Civil War and the X Men Civil War tie-in this would make sense. He was pro-registration...something that the government did to all mutants from his time. It didnt make sense that he would be for it.

Plus, I don't remember if it was in a book or from the X Men cartoon, but I somehow remember learning what that tattoo means on Bishops eye and how he got it. I don't think it had anything to do with prison camps though.

Bishop is a skrull.

There's no other explaination. It would work with his recent very out of character attitude as of recently.
You know what I really liked about LoSH #37? Without resorting to a #1, a reboot, or heavy-handed expositing, the book managed to be an excellent jumping-on point. The basic shape of the major characterizations were established with deft brevity, and instead the issue relied on a tremendous amount of plot threads of varying types to draw the reader's interest. Some people may come back to figure out what's up with the alien attacks, but it was the thread with Lightning Lad's struggles as the Legion leader that really got me wanting to come back next issue.

[...] Greg Burgas has a pretty good review of the issue as a reader who (unlike me) isn’t much of a Legion fan: Shooter introduces the characters along with some of their personalities, and starts setting up a large storyline about aliens invading the solar system, only no one knows who they are, and the Legion is both in disarray thanks to having an unexperienced leader (Lightning Lad, who’s filling the shoes of Cosmic Boy and Supergirl, both of whom have left the team) and a strained relationship with the United Planets. Joe McCulloch makes some good points too regarding the awkward dialogue in the story, with the supposedly-teenaged characters coming across as if they ought to seem “hip” or “futuristic”, but instead just seem silly.
