Snark Free Corner for New Year’s Eve
Welcome to the latest installment of your breath of snark free air!
Enjoy!
UNSUNG COMICS
It gets a bit overlooked, and don’t get me wrong, as he wrote it himself, it is not as good as the comics in which he merely plotted, but Keith Giffen’s PunX is still an overlooked, funny comic.

PunX was basically a lesser form of Ambush Bug, and a lot of the “lesser” part of it came from the fact that a lot of the “in-jokes” were at the expense of Valiant Comics (who made the book), which had a bit of a lesser stature to be made fun of.
Still, the end result was still a humorous comic, that was basically “Mad Magazine on Valiant Comics.”
I especially liked the job they did making fun of Valiant’s “Birthquake” storyline.
Any other fans of PunX out there?
COVER THEME GAME
As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” etc.
In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.
Good luck! A cool point to the first person to figure it out!

cover theme – all titles were pre-existing under a different name, before having their title changed to the new characters’ name.

Cover Contest:
All three are the first covers after each book changed its title. Incredible Hulk to Incredible Herc, Tales of Suspense to Captain America, and Justice League to Justice League International.

Aside from the fact that they’re all the first issues of books after their title has been changed, I’ve got nothing from the Cover Theme game. Unless that is the theme, in which case, woo-hoo!

I believe the character is Dr. Light II. I got it at #4 but #5 cemented it for me.
And yeah, I’m late to the game on this one, but the cover theme has got to be first issue of a re-titling. Unless that’s a misdirection…

The second Doctor Light, got it on #2.
Batman’s New Year’s Resolution: The next time I consider building a giant sentient killer satellite to monitor and control Earth’s super-heroes, I will instead take a deep breath and go to my happy place.
Also, I will send flowers to the widows of all the super-heroes and super-villains that the last one I built murdered in cold blood. It’s really the least I can do.

I remember PunX, I believe only 4 issues came out.
Sigh, why is it a book can’t last for a long time whenever Giffen writes & draws it? (Legion of Super-Heroes being the exception)

Cover theme game: All three covers feature a god on them. Hercules of the Greek gods, Thor of the Norse gods, and Mister Miracle of the New Gods.
Sadly, I didn’t get the female Doc Light until #5.

The New Defenders #125. Normally, I wouldn’t have looked it up, but there’s only been ten posts, and I guess everybody’s sleeping it off . . . so why not take advantage?

Damn…sorry about not closing the link above.
Batman’s resolution: same as the last sixty-odd years: keep it real.
Speaking of resolutions, when’s Dr. Light going to change her name? Not good for business to get confused with a sickie like Artie Light, especially when he’s a white girl and you’re a Japanese woman.

Whoa, I knew both the cover theme and I got Dr. Light on #2. That never happens.

Ha ha ha. Comments like that are what made him so rapey in the first place…

The New Mutants #1.
I got hosed on the rest; I was thinking of “gods,” but didn’t catch on to Mr. Miracle.

as weird as this is going to sound, I got Dr Light II at number one. I was just thinking of her first for some reason.
I know it’s probably not the correct answer for the cover theme game, but all the covers do have a “god” on it. Hercules, Thor and Mr Miricle.

For the cover challenge, did you mean you’re looking for the first issue of series that includes the addition of “New . . .” as part of the series title or cover logo, but without rolling back the odometer to a #1 issue?
With that understanding of the challenge, here’s Ms Marvel (first series) #20. http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=32704&zoom=4

No one mentioned New Avengers yet? how?
I got Dr. Light on #2 as well, but I thought the cover theme game was going to be homages: the Hulk cover has been done twice before (counting the original), the Cap cover showed up as a Marvel Zombies/AoD cover, and the JLI was redone (again, twice) during Morrison’s JLA.
Hmm, in fact… has the Cap cover been homaged twice? That could be a unique theme, as well.

Oh, and as regards Punx – I bought it recently but didn’t get it, I guess mostly because I haven’t read any Valiant comics other than it.

Figures. The first time I get the cover theme and the mystery character, and I’m not at work to jump on the post right away. Oh well.
I concur with the re-titling/old numbering for the covers, though the gods theme would work as well. Technically, though, the gods might NOT work. Herc is a demi-god, and I don’t know that Mr. Miracle was ever worshiped.
I had Dr. Light II, but it took me all 5 to get it.
