This is the one-hundred and fortieth in a series of examinations of comic book urban legends and whether they are true or false. Click here for an archive of the previous one-hundred and thirty-nine. Click here for a similar archive, only arranged by subject.
Let’s begin!
What I bought - 30 January 2008
- by Greg Burgas
- Thursday, January 31st, 2008 at 8:18 PM EST
Yes, things are back to normal around here, as my parents have flown off to Pennsylvania and I have more time to post. I’d like to thank everyone who indulged me last week and thought it was a cool thing to do, and for those of you who didn’t like it, I’m back to […]
Interesting Superhero Novel
- by Brian Cronin
- Thursday, January 31st, 2008 at 2:11 PM EST
Rob Rogers dropped me a line about his new superhero novel that is coming out soon (it is solicited in the February issue of Previews), from Wizards of the Coast’s new book line - Wizards Discoveries.
Here is Rob’s description of the book (and read more to see the cover, plus Greg Rucka’s take on the […]
Who Wouldn’t Want to be Friends with Tara McPherson?
- by Brian Cronin
- Thursday, January 31st, 2008 at 2:04 PM EST
At the same time, it is quite surprising/impressive to note that McPherson currently has the second-most “friends” out of any comic creator on MySpace.
That’s some impressive networking mojo right there!!
Cronin Theory of Comics - Creators and Their Work Are Two Separate Entities
- by Brian Cronin
- Thursday, January 31st, 2008 at 5:44 AM EST
I’ve been following the coverage of Judd Winick’s relaunch of the Wolfman/Perez-era Titans (CBR just had a piece on Winick and the book here), and it’s really interesting to note that Judd Winick just seems like a really nice fellow.
He did an interview with George Perez for Wizard (which I believe had been archived […]
Greatest News Ever?
- by Brian Cronin
- Wednesday, January 30th, 2008 at 2:14 PM EST
I was pumped when Ostrander came back to do the Suicide Squad (and it has been quite good so far), but this news is even better than that.
Actually, when Giffen/DeMatteis and Maguire reunited for Formerly Known as the Justice League, that was probably a little better news than this, but this is still very good […]
Captain America #34 Review
- by Brian Cronin
- Wednesday, January 30th, 2008 at 1:31 PM EST
What gets lost sometimes in the media hype of the death of Captain America in #25 is that the story was part ONE of a long storyline and that it was all tied into a over-arching story that Ed Brubaker had been doing since the FIRST ISSUE of his Captain America run, so now, 34 […]
Anyone catch Quesada on Colbert?
- by Brian Cronin
- Wednesday, January 30th, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST
This one was a lot odder than the previous one, as this one got a lot more particular about the plotlines. A good deal more obscure, but still quite a lot of fun.
Click here for the video of the interview.
This Comic Is Good - Marvel Two-in-One Annual #7
- by Brian Cronin
- Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 at 12:40 PM EST
The Annual for Marvel Two-in-One in 1982 did not come with a lot of hype, so not only was it a really good comic book story, but it came as a real surprise at the time. As unheralded as it was when it was released, the comic has persisted as one of the strongest Annuals […]
Let’s See A New Comic Credit!

I was reading Bill Willingham’s comments about his departure from Salvation Run after only two issues, and he said something that I think most of us know already - writing comics like Salvation Run is a pain in the ass -
However, with ‘Salvation Run,’ another in the DCU’s seemingly endless stream of big event stories, […]

Here’s the latest Storytelling Engine from John Seavey. Click here to read John’s description of what a Storytelling Engine IS, anyways. Check out more of them at his blog, Fraggmented.
Storytelling Engines: Savage Dragon
(or “Working Without A Net”)
We’ve done a lot of discussing of storytelling engines in this column over the last year or so, […]
Giffen on Continuity
- by Brian Cronin
- Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 at 4:59 AM EST
Keith Giffen’s latest column at CBR has a very interesting topic. In it, Giffen takes on continuity.
Great idea for a column, right? Everyone loves talking about continuity.
Unfortunately, I think Giffen ends up spending way too much time fighting against a strawmen, the fans who freak out over the idea of Spider-Man being in Japan with […]
One More One More Day Go-Around
- by Brian Cronin
- Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 at 2:21 AM EST
The last CBR interview with Joe Quesada is up. This is the one that is made up of questions from fans, and it is pretty interesting reading, unless, of course, you just want to hear Quesada say, “I am so sorry! How could I have been so foolish? Will you please forgive me?,” in which […]
