Best of 2007 - YOU Pick the Categories!
- by Brian Cronin
- in Announcements
I figured that this year, rather than do the typical "Best Writer," "Best Artist," etc. that we usually do (which usually ends up with the same names repeated for the winners - a certain Mr. Morrison's name is mentioned quite a few times, typically), I thought it would be nice to have this year's "Best of 2007" have some more unique categories.
So please, folks, comment with your suggestions for categories. Here are some samples of the type of thing I'm looking for - "Best Turnaround on a Comic Book Title WithOUT a Creative Change," "Funniest Comic Book of the Year," "Best Ed Brubaker Comic Book of the Year." Stuff like that.
I'll pick the best 10-15, and then we'll post our picks for each category!

How about something for "Most Surprisingly Good Comic of the Year". In other words, which comic did you not expect to like but ended up really enjoying.

"Best Wild Pop-Culture Remix" -- Strong contenders would be Matt Fraction and Grant Morrison.
"Best Boundary-Pushing of the Medium" -- Not so much a writing thing as an award for the comic that does really new and bold formal things. "Wow, i didn't realize you could do comics that way!"
"Best Throwaway Concept" -- The sort of thing Moore, Morrison and others specialize in -- the little tossed-off idea or suggestion that someone will expand into a massive story five or ten years later. Probably excludes Geoff Johns's stuff, since he almost always means these as plot setups for himself.
"Best Compression" and "Best Decompression" -- Self-explanatory, I'd think.
"Best Extras/Special Features" --i.e., the back matter in Casanova and Criminal, the massive fold-out Batcave by Jim Lee, etc.
"Best Career Comeback"
"Best Bad Comic of the Year/Guilty Pleasure" -- "I shouldn't be reading this, let alone praising it, but it was so much fun despite all."

I'd like to throw in "Best ON SCHEDULE comic of the Year". (not just awarded for actually staying on schedule, mind you, I mean the best comic with the condition that it had to be good without needing to have frustrating delays, if that makes sense).
Maybe "Consistently best character depicted by multiple creators", for the character that remained cool wherever they turned up (e.g. could be JLA characters who were in Justice mini and/or their own books, could be certain Green Lanterns, could be Iron Man if you liked his characterization this year, etc.).
How about something like "Best Ending to a story or storyarc"?
Best new name? Power? Gimmick?
The mind boggles at the possibilities.

New Character that you most want to dropkick to the South Pole -
Best ongoing subplot (lasts at least 6 issues)- an example here would be Brenda and LaDama in Blue Beetle.

Following up on one of Omar's suggestions, I'd like to see an award for 'Best Expansion of a Throwaway Concept' (for example, the throwaway Moore stuff that Johns worked into Sinestro Corps War, that sort of thing).

Although I like your other suggestions a lot, these two sound like they would just turn into excuses for yet another predictable Morrison or Fraction gushfest, which I presume Brian wanted to avoid this time around.
I'd nominate "Best Fan Uproar Moment" There were a lot this year, from how bad Countdown reactions were to MJ Statues to One More Day, etc.

Here's another one: "Most avoidably delayed comic." Meaning this comic was not just delayed, but it was so obvious from the moment the comic was announced that it would be delayed. For example Jim Lee is seriously behind on a monthly books, I have an idea: let's give him a NEW monthly, Wildcats.

Best Comics Blog (excluding this one, since we're all already reading it)
(I like all my suggestions, though a couple are similar to some already posted. I also very much like the Best On-Time Comic. Most laugh-out-loud suggestion so far: MightyGodKing's "Most Impressive Justification For Claiming That All-Star Batman And Robin Is A Good Comic.")

Not just Brian. I mean, I like All-Star Superman as much as anyone, but it's not the be-all and end-all. I think one of our strengths around here is the diversity of viewpoint and I am hoping for categories that will bring that out.

"Best Comic With Orders Above 100,000"
"Best Comic With Orders Below 10,000"
Using ICV2 numbers, of course.
"Best Co-Writing"
Given the number of comics with multiple writers lately, I thought this might be an interesting category.
"Least Essential Reprint"
"Least Essential One-Shot or Mini-Series"
"Least Essential Ongoing Series"
Not bad, per se, just . . . superfluous. And, yes, I stole this one from The Onion.
