Predating UXM 494 there's a scene in XM 205 in the battle between Wolverine and Gambit where Wolverine refers to the baby as She.

Godland is great, but suffered a bit in quality this year. Only six issues came out, and one was a recap issue, while another wasn't that great. The latest issue rebounded somewhat, and I hope it can get back onto a decent schedule, because when it's on, it's an absolute blast.

Greg,

Thanks for the list. However, I would expand "super-hero" to anyone that puts on a costume, beats people up (in the name of justice, of course) and has a secret identity, and even that is a bit narrow. I'll probably check out The Order soon since, even though it is Marvel, it has all-new characters. Also, how do you feel about Godland?

Davidwynne,

I've avoided Paul Grist's stuff so far, but I'm checking out Jack Staff #1 on Imagecomics.com right now, and I really like what he does with panels and narration, I might have to pick up a trade.

It might be sacrilegious, but I don't like Paul Grist all that much. I suppose I could pick up the first "monthly" issue when it comes out and see if I like it.

Did Jack Staff even come out in 2007?

I am eagerly awaiting its release in 2008!

EDITED TO ADD: I see it DID come out with one issue (and that one issue WAS quite good), so sure, I would definitely consider it in the Top 5.

What about Jack Staff? I don't read any of that top five, admittedly, but they'd have to be pretty awesome to be better than Jack Staff. I'd put it in my top five ongoing comics, superhero or not.

Well, Brad, I've always liked Faerber's writing on Noble Causes, so I'm not sure if I can say it's improved. He is occasionally pedantic, sure, but for the most part, he does a good job with the characters.

Top Five Superhero Comics? That's a good question. I'm going to assume "superhero" means people with powers, because I don't really consider Catwoman a superhero comic. Maybe it is. Anyway, my favorites (in no particular order) are:

1. Dynamo 5
2. Noble Causes
3. Invincible
4. The Order
5. Iron Fist

Yes, I know the last two are by Marvel, but they're kind of weird Marvel. Blue Beetle is pretty good as well. If Welcome to Tranquility isn't dead, that's pretty good too. Whenever I read any other superhero books (the Avengers stuff, Superman stuff, Green Lantern stuff, Thor), I'm invariably disappointed by the hollowness of it all. Even the X-Men books, which I like, don't have the same verve as the five I listed. Any of those five titles are, to use a word that should be used more to describe superhero comics, thrilling.

Greg, since you teased it in your review of Dynamo 5, what would you say are the top 5 super-hero comics being published right now?

I love super-heroes, but I want nothing to do with the mainstream DC/Marvel books right now (or ever again really).

Also has Jay Faerber's dialogue/narration improved? That drove me to put Noble Causes down the first time I tried to read it.

1- I think the point came across fine on page 3, and if you don't count the ads; pages 14, and 16, and 17, and... whatever. In the end it's up to the reader/parents to decide what is appropriate.

2- re: TTG Audience... the art, the fact that TT are kids, the tone of the book and the fact that Amy Wolfram was head writer and story editor in the Teen Titans Animated Show (and I think she still writes for Ben Ten and LoSH).

3- So it's "wail" and not "whale"?!?!?

Damn you Urban-dictionary!!! YOU'VE FAILED ME FOR THE LAST TIME!!!

4- So... umm. I now return this blog to Greg?!?! Sorry, about that Mr. Burgas.

Red-Rick-

I agree, it isn't in Batman's nature to beat up on Robin. He is being mind controlled. Sure, eventually he could rebel against whatever programming is messing with his head, but he hasn't gotten there yet. To mix fictional universes, it took Chekov a while to rebel against Khan's earwigs, whose to say in issue 4 Bats won't shake off whoever is messing with his head. Also, I'm curious as to why you think this is being directed at a TTG audience. Is it the art, or the fact that the Titans are youg teens?

Bryan Levy: Quit looking for things to nitpick.

It's not about nitpicking. It's about common sense and lazy writing/editing. It shouldn't be in Batman's nature to whale on Robin, just like it shouldn't be in Superman's nature to go O.J. on Lois; no matter who's controlling their actions.

Kinda reminds me of the whole Spike/Buffy rape. "Hey Buffy, let me rape you." "Hey Buffy, I got a soul now; let's conveniently forget about the rape thingie... and mack!"

In any case, I liked the book, but feel that the powers that be exercised poor judgement (and clearly can't tell when something is "too much"); specially when everyone can see that this book is geared towards the Teen Titans Go clientele.

In regards to the trusting Bishop/mistrusting Cable thing: Bishop may have been a loose cannon at times, but in the end he's usually been presented as a good little cop for quite awhile now. For the other X-Men it would be natural to accept him at face value. Cable, on the other hand, has been Mr. Ulterior Motives since day one. And considering he's spent the last couple years setting up his own country and taking over another, the X-Men would have to assume that he has some kind of larger plan in mind for the baby. He probably wouldn't kill it, but he's too unpredictable to trust. Cyclops giving X-Force permission use lethal force is a bit much, but it only underscores the fact that Cable is too unpredictable to entrust with the future of the mutant race.

As for the Terminator thing, who's to say that the nipples don't serve some sort of practical function? Maybe she's like Red Dwarf's Kryten, and one nipple regulates temperature and the other picks up radio frequencies.

Tomer: Hey, there it is! I like the idea that it's Layla Miller. That would be neat.

I really disagree with the criticisms of TT:Y1. That last scene didn't have me worrying about child abuse accusations. I was only thinking, "Wow, what's wrong with Batman?" Quit looking for things to nitpick. And, I think the advocate groups would be more upset at a grown man engaging in cos-play with a 12 year old and taking him crime fighting than a backhand to the face.

red-Ricky: I’m sure Batman’s behavior is part of some villain’s master plan.

I figured as much... on account that Batman takes the pearl necklace.

But both emotional & physical abuse of a twelve year old?!?!?!?

Add a can of beer and a tank-top/"wife-beaters"/ and he could go from walking billboard to walking cliché!!!

Like I said, in the old days they would've found a way to better convey the situation without going medieval on Robin's ass!

Think about it. You send this comic to any number of advocate groups (all conveniently located in Washington DC, within walking distance of each other) and it won't matter how many space aliens were controlling Batman's thoughts, both DC and Warner Bros. will end up with a PR nightmare in their hands. All because the Editor's an idiot!!!

The baby is clearly Layla Miller, same eyes and makes a lot of sense considering how she appeared, how she know things and how she is relevant in saving the mutants.

red-Ricky: I’m sure Batman’s behavior is part of some villain’s master plan. It has to be, because he’s just acting too weird for it to be normal. It’s a bit jarring, sure, but I imagine it will be explained soon enough.

Given that the series seems to be a modernized retelling of some the first Teen Titan adventure (in which they joined up to stop a mind controlled JLA), this is probably correct. There are some posts on scans_daily that show the older version of this meeting.

(Titans: Year One also has a reference to the Flips, who were a band who appeared in one of the early Teen Titans issues.)
