Lucion,

Thanks for your compliments on our trades. It is always good to know what aspects of our book people dig.

Just so you know, Cover Girl and WWTT are both out and Left On Mission will be out next week -- at your local comic book store. Because of issues I won't bore you with, our trades are coming out in the mass market, i.e. Amazon a couple of months after the direct market, i.e. your local comic book stores.

If you want to get them faster, try TFAW.com. They have them all at the same time the comic shops do and have comparable discounts!

Best,

Chip

I really haven't seen anyone "sucking up" to Morrison in a while. Everyone likes All-Star Superman, but it comes out seasonally and plenty of people didn't like the Bizarro story. Batman gets so-so reviews, aside from Club of Heroes, and Williams got most of the credit for that.

I'm sure someone already pointed this out, but the cover to Scalped #3 is quite similar to Greg's favourite. One of those amusing coincidences. I'm not sure which one I like more; probably Scalped, but I'm an admitted Jock afficionado. (I really just wrote that, didn't I?)

Mr. Mosher,

How about you get those Cover Girl and Left on Mission trades shipped? Oh, and What Were They Thinking?! as well.

I mean that nicely, as I have them in my Amazon wishlist and look forward to reading them, but I must wait until March?

Looking back, I noticed you asked me what specifically I liked about Boom trades last month and forgot to answer (woops!). Here is my reply:

I have four or five Boom trades. They are a different size than most, but I don't feel they lose anything in the shrinking (not that I have the individual issues, but you understand). They just appear to be a quality product. Well printed with clear art and vibrant colors and some nice bonus material. And I seem to remember I really like the way the covers feel. The matte feel with the gloss highlights. Sure, that sounds weird, but you asked! I like the stories. None of them, save for the Giffen/DeMatteis books are remotely similar (in addition to those two, WH40k: DC and Talent, with Savage Brothers on order). Just enjoyable stories really. Not mired in continuity or crossovers. Quality escapism. What more can I ask for?

Seriously, get those new books out before I decide I need waste my money on the Iron Man trades!

On Morrison...

See, as a fan of his mainstream work I have no problem with Morrison sticking full time to the DCU. We lost him to Marvel for a few years which really bugged me, since despite his presence on the titles I had absolutely no interest in Marvel Boy or X-Men or Fantastic Four: 1,2,3,4.
I think part of folks' problem with Batman is the lateness of the book, and that was an art issue. Something tells me if it had stayed on scheduled we'd have a much better idea by now where Morrison is going and the themes he's working with.
But it's still a great read, and this comes from a reader (me) who has NEVER followed a run of Batman in his life.
All-Star Superman has been a disappointment in terms of sheer lateness. First it was monthly, then bi-monthly, now it's, what, whenever the hell it gets out?
I don't know if Morrison is to blame or Quitely.
I don't read Wildstorm but frankly wonder if Morrison even cared about that gig. I mean, why should he? They're just analogues of DCU characters anyway and he's already writing two of DC's icons. I get the feeling the gig was part of his deal with DC and he just lost interest or something and nobody fought him on it.
I have mixed hopes for Final Crisis in part because it just seems like such an odd fit - One of modern comics' greatest writers taking on a concept which DC has just beat into the ground in recent years.
But at the same time I don't think Morrison is just phoning this in. I think he loves the DCU and will do wonders with a "Crisis" event if given free reign by editorial, which it appears is happening from comments Didio has made.
Frankly I think the greater question is "where does Morrison go after Final Crisis"?
Look at the arc of his career at DC. He begins revamping Silver Age oddities like Animal Man and Doom Patrol for Vertigo. Then he gets the plumb JLA assignment and shows he can do mainstream superheroes better than just about anybody around. Then he leaves for Marvel, only to return to DC and take on TWO of it's icons at once plus craft an amazingly intricate, 30-issue miniseries that revives and revitalizes some dormant DC characters.
Now it only seems natural that he be given the opportunity to craft his own Crisis. But now what?
I'm actually fearful Grant will leave DC after this is over for a few years if not longer. Something tells me we'll read some interview with him towards the end of Final Crisis about how he has NOTHING left to say in the DCU, etc.
So appreciate the guy while he's around, folks.

Just wanted to pop in and say, “Thanks, Greg!” -- and to make sure Kevin Church receives the lion’s share of the credit. All I really did on COVER GIRL was come up the title, premise, and a very basic outline for the story. The magic is all Kevin’s. Way to go, Kev!

I knew there was something that put me off Fables, but I never knew how to articulate it. Though, of course, it just makes me wonder how you can stomach Jay Faerber's scripting...

Great post by the way, Greg.

Nice list, Greg. And thanks for taking me seriously! I was going to mention that Fell #9 is coming out tomorrow, but somebody beat me to it. And I agree about Morrison; he needs to do something more personal soon. I've heard rumors about a Vertigo (maxi?)series, and a sequel to Seaguy. Both of those would be cool. I don't know if I want to pick up Final Crisis or not, but I will consider it, if only because he's writing it. Anybody else (unless it was Daniel Clowes or somebody else completely out of left field, but that'll never happen) and I wouldn't bother.

Fables... while the plotting is great, the scripting isn’t sensational.

And here I thought I was the only one who noticed that...

Chip: I felt bad about having a tie for fifth, but the two books are similar in terms of quality, and I didn't want to flip a coin.

I have noticed that you've been getting the books out on time more, and I do appreciate it. It's all about wanting good comics, after all, and I'm impatient!

I would definitely say The Order is that good, David. For a pure superhero book, you can't do much better right now.

Great overview of the year, Greg, and thanks for starting out the post by saying that this was the best of what you read this year – a lot of folk put up 'Best of' lists when it is obvious that they haven't read nearly enough to qualify that statement. Your validity is backed-up by the rainforest of comics you read through the year :)

And is The Order THAT good? I might have to check it out now ...

jazzbo: I claim credit for dubbing Mr. Morrison The God of All Comics. It was, of course, meant a bit ironically, but I do think he's a great writer, one of the best working in the field. That's partly why he's my Disappointment. I KNOW he can do a lot better than he's done this year, and I hope he will, because although a Batman book with a hit-and-miss Morrison is better than most Batman books of the past decade, it's still not the greatness we've come to expect from him.
