Is it just me of does the series seem to take off hen Rogers is doing the solo writing? I was going to drop the book until isue 6 or 7, “how I survived my infinite crisis,” which was all Rogers and Roleau and ever sice, the best issues, the ones where people say the series have finally found its voice, have been the Rogers one.

Simna gets it right according to the Blue Beetle Companion from Twomorrows Press. Also: the design ideas came from Alex Ross’s Kingdom Come Beetle.

BUT all credit goes to Giffen, Rogers, AND Hamner.

That explains a lot. The character is far too awesome to be a Johns design, and his visuals doesn’t suit Jiminez’ style. It’s spot on for Hamner, though (who I wish was still artisng the book).
I’m still baffled that Dan “I Hate Fun” Didio is backing the book… but I’ll take it gleefully.

Dr. Finger is mostly right. After Giffen was offered the book, John Rogers made a bunch of posts about the death of Ted in Countdown to IC. The two both had done work for BOOM Studios, so Giffen gave him a “you think you can do better?” sort of offer to co-write.

Cully Hamner was brought in to do the character design and then the first issue was scripted. After that the origin was back ported into Infinite Crisis #5 by Geoff Johns.

Giffen said he was offered the chance to create the new character with only two stipulations, he had to be a teen, and he had to use the scarab. Giffen then came up with the rest, including making him hispanic (Giffen’s wife is hispanic, so he relates to that culture a lot). I believe Duncan Rouleau did the visual design.

He was created by Geoff Johns and Phil Jiminez in Infinite Crisis, I think. Or at least that’s where he made his first appearance, a couple months before the first issue of his monthly.
