Wow. Brad Renfro died the other day, too. What's going on with young actors?

This is no joke- I actually looked at the calendar and thought "It's not April 1st, so I know this shouldn't be some publicity stunt." It's still sinking in, but wow, just wow. I feel for his family, especially his little girl. It's going to give a whole new resonance to Dark Knight...

"what the fuck?"
That was pretty much my reaction too.

"What the fuck" was pretty much my reaction too. I wasn't really a fan - liked him in The Patriot and Casanova, have no desire to ever see Brokeback Mountain. When I first hear that he was cast in The Dark Knight as Joker, I thought "Heath Ledger? You've got to be joking" (pun intended). Then I saw that video a couple minutes ago of the first six minutes of the movie and began to think he just might pull it off. What a shame, especially for his baby daughter. It won't be quite the same watching The Dark Knight now.

It's insensitive to intend puns in this thread. Please don't intend them.
Also: This is awful. I really like the movies he is in, particularly Knight's Tale, Brokeback Awesome, and Ten Things I Hate about the Taming of the Shrew.

Whether you're going to see it or not (for whatever reason), he is really really good in Brokeback.

We get so used to reading about tragedy and random death. Then something inexplicable happens like this and it just rocks me back in my chair.
Made it, Ma! Top of the world!
Sheesh.

It really sucks. When I first heard Ledger was cast as Joker, I HATED it. But after the publicity photos & most recently that incredible trailer, I had no doubts at all. And now, wow. This just really, really sucks.

My first thought "Holy shit!"
He was young, talented and as far as I could see, well-adjusted. Hardly any scandal in the tabloid about him.
So was River Phoenix.
Wonder if this will derail "The Dark Knight" movie?
May he rest in peace.

Derail DARK KNIGHT? Hardly. As the saying goes, no such thing as bad publicity. If anything, this will drive the box office. Proof? Two words: THE and CROW.

It thought it was a joke at first too.
Still taking time for the news to sink in my head.

This was such a strange piece of news. Nobody saw this coming and it really shocked me with how sudden and unexpected it was. It's a real pity, he was a great actor.

I've been a professional actor for the last 25 years. I am used to hearing people praise the latest pretty face who got a break in Hollywood as a "great actor" or a "genius". 90% of the time they are just wanking.
From what I've seen, Heath Ledger had the real chops. This is a great loss.

why is it ok for you to make jokes about those movies, particularly ten things i hate about you, but you reprimand someone else for making a pun about a movie he was in?

I think it's because those things in no way dishonor his memory or mock him. In fact, one is a compliment ("Brokeback Awesome") and the other just acknowledges a plain fact about the movie (that "Ten Things..." is a teen comedy refit of "Taming of the Shrew"). Plus, I think the poster my have been indulging in a bit of self-mockery, not mockery of the dead.

Does anyone else remember another time Ledger was *rumored* to be dead, during the filming of The Order I think? Maybe it was just in my little corner of the world, as this was before the big blog-splosion had hit our sleepy little town, but I remember people arguing long and hard over whether it was true or not. And thats why when I first heard this I was sure it wasn't true.

Does this mean I'm gonna have to pretend that A Knight's Tale was a good movie, lest I be called an asshole?

Heath was a great actor, and we loved him even more for being an Australian boy..... Appears he had pneumonia, and overdosed on pills. If this is true, a shame.
If he did take his own life, as rumored, then what a wanker.
I hope he had no intentions of doing so, and that this tragic loss is just that.

Another two words: BRUCE and LEE.
He became more famous after his death than he could ever have dreamed of in life.
Kind of like OBI WAN KENOBI.

Wow. So, I guess it's up to us to start the rumours of a Batman curse, right?
Christian Bale must be shitting it. Stay away from them horses, Christian!

Good call Apodaca.
Knew Ledger could pull of the Joker as soon as I saw him as Skip in Lords of Dog Town.
And for better or worse he will from now on be forever linked to actors such as Brandon and Bruce Lee....and James Dean even.
No signs of a Batman curse though

RIP Heath, may you rest in peace.
I can believe he was only 28, such a tragic waste.
If you want to watch the best movie that he was ever involved in get yourself a copy of "Two Hands" one of the most underated Aussie movies of all time.

Nothing should force someone to pretend that was a good movie, although I thought his performance was one of the few good things about it.
He was a fine actor, in my opinion. He wasn't in a lot of stuff I watched, but I liked what I did see him in.

From the CBR film col,
The Joker is dead, Tony Stark shows off the goods again and people in costume patrol Hollywood, plus "Watchmen," "Smallville," strike coverage and more.
With such gravity given to the situation I thought I was on E!'s website for a minute.

That's my basic feeling, too. He was a million times better than the majority of famous actors out there, and he seemed to really try to do good work.
It's a shame we won't get to see him develop.

I agree totally with that assessment, also with the Mutt's assertion that there aren't enough true and honest talents out there that we can afford to lose one. Rest ye well, Mr. Ledger, you'll be missed.
