Thanks for the info, Tony!

While I can't say that I like the original cover, almost all my concerns with the cover were based on the idea that DC covered up the bomb, which just made no sense, so I'm glad that is not the case (in other words, having the bomb not visible is a lot more palatable of an idea if it is an artistic choice rather than editorial fiat - I might not agree with it, but it at least is understandable). Otherwise, I'd just go back to my original comment for the cover, which was something along the lines of "An odd cover by Tony Moore."

actually, dudes, you've got it backwards. the plain one WITHOUT the see-thru bomb melon was the original iteration. DC felt i needed to spoon-feed the concept to the readers a bit more, and add a see-thru effect to show the bomb.... and judging from the responses here, i guess they were right.

The Che Guevara resemblance was primarily to illustrate a larger plot point, about this kid falling in with a group of latin-power movement bombers who hit grocery stores, and some of the kid's personal delusions therein.

The inhaler was to make the character more identifiable, since he'd aged a bit since we saw him as an asthmatic little boy, and several of his prominent earlier scenes involved him and his condition.

i dunno. i did like a hundred sketches for this thing and this is the one editorial told me to pursue. It's several stages of change away from my initial concept, of a plain ol' Che poster with him holding a melon, as a simple striking image of curiosity. i dunno. maybe it's for the best. i'm impressed by the amount of pontification you guys have gone through with it, though.

cheers!

Did I misread DanCJ’s post? If so, I apologize. I haven’t been sleeping well lately, and my eyes are killing me. It’s a little hard to concentrate sometimes. If I went off on a misunderstanding, just ignore me.

That's okay. Brian explained it better than I did.

Personally I immediately thought the inhaler was a trigger when I looked a cover - even though that probably doesn't make sense for a bomb with a timer - unless the trigger starts the timer.

The Exterminators usually has really good covers. The Philip Bond cover to #20 with the roach throwing a grenade is my favorite. http://www.comicbookdb.com/graphics/comic_graphics/1/203/101138_20070801204920_large.jpg

However, that doesn't explain why it is featured so prominently, when just a little glimpse of the inhaler (perhaps showing from inside a pocket) would have been enough to make a succesful reference for those who knew that piece of information beforehand, thus avoiding confusion for those less familiar with the history of this controversial figure.

To quote Dave from Summer School:
"Anna Maria, we dedicate these cantaloupes to you!"

So stupid, yet they bust out more tit for a Catwoman cover. Hypocrites!

Dan's point was that the lyrics of the song was pointing out that carrying a gun to school was a BAD thing, but the censors wouldn't let the lyric get by, even though it was an ANTI-gun message, just because it mentioned bringing guns to school period.

If this was the early 90's they could have done a big gimmick cover where you could scratch away the melon to reveal a bomb.

"What I’m wondering is how the hell they got that bomb in that cantaloupe in the first place without ripping it to pieces. Did they organically grow it there?"

Like I've always said, you show me an asthmatic, I'll show you a fruit bomber!

Clearly DC is in the pocket of Big Asthma and bowed to pressure.

If he's s'posed to be Che Guevara, then, Che was asthmatic, so combined with the beret and the title of the story (Raising Che I think somebody said) then that's your explanation. As to the mystery of the inhaler. I think. Don't quote me on that though. The new cover makes no sense. At all.

I love how 30 totally got the reverse impression of what 29 was saying, and just ran with it!

Anyway, nervous kid is nervous. He has a bomb. Read comic to find out more. Re-do job makes no sence tho, unless the issue is all about melons or summink.

"Thats PC America"
-That comment is so nonsensical and asinine that I couldn't even come up with a witty retort.

To me, it looks like the kid is freaking out about the bomb and thus has inhaler on hand in case he starts hyperventilating. As for the change... I'm baffled.

I read DanCJ's post without the slightest inclination that he actually supported kids bringing guns to school. I thought he was just being ironic. Now I know better.

Bad, DanCJ. Bad. No.
