Even if Kitty does die, this is rendered moot as:
1. Breakworld technology can resurrect dead mutants.
2. Cassandra Nova. Remember her? Yeah, like the omnipotent villain with intentionally vague telekinetic and molecular powers (that has been conspicuously absent for a spell) won't be used as a deus ex machina.

Yeah, Whedon has killed Kitty, no doubt about it. And yeah, it sucks. Seems like he did it (or will do it, as you prefer) as a "I won't let anyone touch my pet" thing.

Doesn't Claremont have a Kitty Pryde in Exiles *already*? I thought I saw a "Shadowcat" of some sort in the preview info released a while back. And has anyone else seen the Greg Land pin-up floating around of the "new" Astonishing team (with people like Pixie from New X-Men in it)? Has it been said what that was for yet? And come to think of it, where the hell did I see that shot in the first place...was it the Marvel Spotlight: Messiah Complex book? Help!

And let's not forget the complaints about how Marvel was going to kill Mary Jane during One More Day--or how, once the actual story came out, some people said that killing her was what they should have done. The 24-hour news cycle has not been good for fandom.

I've never understood the appeal of Kitty Pride. I didn't like it when she joined way back in the 80's, and I haven't liked her since. I hate kid mascots on teams, and that's the way I've always seen her - the wide-eyed incompetent liability to the team that inexplicably got a disproportionate amount of camera time. Can someone explain to me how someone whose biggest power is the ability to flee from situations by running through objects ever got on the team to begin with? She's like Sue Storm before they beefed her up with the force fields.

My guess is sheâ€™s going to â€˜dieâ€™ her way into being Mutant Zero. Slott claims that even people who donâ€™t regularly follow comics will recognize Zero when the mask comes off, and, well, Mutant Zero is a *shudder* ninja.

Doesn't that rule out Kitty Pryde?

The one thing that always strikes me when the death -or possible death- of a character comes up is how quick fans are to assume the worst. In the recent past I've heard moaning that Hawkeye was dead and never coming back, Cyclops was dead and never coming back, that Wong was dead and never coming back, that Dum Dum Dugan was dead and... you get the picture. Considering I haven't seen press releases from Marvel about Kitty's death or Dr. Hank McCoy grimly stating "She's dead Slim" I'm going to view this as yet another chapter in the ongoing plot of the X-Men franchise instead of some huge change in the status quo.

Really, Astonishing X-Men is quite the example of how massive lateness can ruin any dramatic buildup. Take the latest issue, where it was revealed that the architect behind the prophecy was... someone. Perhaps if I could remember who all the damn Breakworld aliens are, were, I might have cared. After all, "Unstoppable" started back in 2006.

Initiative #5 has Gyrich noting that Mutant Zero shouldn't be addressed by any of the old names (plural). With Slott's quote, I'm pretty sure she's Kitty.

She hasn't actually been killed, nor do I have any information that she has been killed. It's just an educated guess (that is almost certainly right, but I don't know for a fact that it's right).

DecRab should learn how to use the term SPOILER, or POTENTIAL SPOILER in some of his more time-sensitive installments. This is not the first series that has had its cover blown for me thanks to a silly rabbit's tricks (and comics aren't just for kids, but I digress). On the one hand, I do understand that such is the threat of the net -- don't read if you don't want to know. But people writing headlines could be a little more responsible, please. We can meet in the middle on this.

That said: Go ahead, Joss, kill her.
