Me too. I used to draw a lot in middle school, but I had no idea how to go about making a comic. Thanks to my website (Plug: http://comicsintheclassroom.net/) I have had the oportunity to give workshops on comic creating to elementary and middle school kids.

I did a couple longer workshops this summer and the manga thing mentioned earlier was true for some, but there were a lot of kids that prefered more North Amaerican style comics and they all showed respect for whatever the other kids liked to read (most of the grade6-7 group only read Archie and Calvin and Hobbes).

I’m a 36 yr old guy who has been drawing and writing his own little “funny strips” for the past 10 years or so, just for his own amusement … I wished I had my own Way-Back Machine so I could have done some of this type of stuff in Jr High instead of Industrial Arts Drafting for 2 years

It is exciting to see such fantastic and creative work by these talented young artists. In my syndicated newspaper comic titled “Slylock Fox and Comics for Kids” I publish drawings by young readers, and I am seeing more and more kids drawing in a manga style. I agree about the manga influence – twelve years ago, when I was in a high school cartooning class, we put together a project like this, and only two had a manga look to it.
Being that it was the mid-90′s, mine was, of course, overly cross-hatched with needlessly complicated panel layout.

Interesting to see that all the kids are manga influenced. Manga really reaches the next generation in a way that American comics don’t even try to.
