Greatest News Ever?

I was pumped when Ostrander came back to do the Suicide Squad (and it has been quite good so far), but this news is even better than that.

Actually, when Giffen/DeMatteis and Maguire reunited for Formerly Known as the Justice League, that was probably a little better news than this, but this is still very good news!

A new Ambush Bug mini-series, by Giffen and (quite importantly) Robert Loren Fleming!

Happy days are here again!

You see I was feeling this way and then I remembered how excited I was to see Scott Shaw doing Captain Carrot again…and then I remembered how depressed and angry I was when I got to the last issue (so angry I didn’t buy the comic).

So maybe it will be good, but maybe it won’t.

Even so I’m glad to see Robert Loren Fleming back writing comics in some form. I was re-reading Thriller recently and that comic was Grant Morrison-cool before there was Grant Morrison!

I’ve never even read an Ambush Bug story before and I am happy about this news. DC needs a good lighthearted book that also skewers/comments on some of their recent storytelling trends (such as deathdeathdeath, etc.) It would be nice if they could put out a collection of the earlier minis and specials, even if it’s a Showcase edition.

And I missed the recent Captain Carrot mini, what was it about the ending that got people up in arms so much…?

Andrew - At the end of the Captain Carrot mini, they got turned into “real” animals on New Earth or Regular DCU Earth or whatever.

That said, Bill Morrison isn’t the original writer of Captain Carrot. Giffen & Fleming *are* the classic Ambush Bug team. That makes a big difference.

Anyway, I can’t wait. Ambush Bug is one of my favorite things ever, and I don’t imagine they’ll let me down now.

6 issues is NOT enough!

And there had better be a return appearance of Combat Cheeks: Frontline Medic!

The ending was dictated to Shaw! and Morrison by Didio to make it a Countdown tie-in, so it had basically nothing to do with the rest of the story and felt really out of place. It also involved the heroes all failing spectacularly and losing their powers, among other things.

(Honestly the details are so bizarre you really need to get a hold of a copy. And DC needs to publish their long-overdue Zatanna & Captain Carrot mini-series.)

If you were a Captain Carrot fan who sincerely enjoyed the tone of those crazy-ass old books, it was kind of a kick in the head. At the end of Oz-Wonderland War the characters were at least preserved in amber, and the end of Whatever Happened to Captain Carrot? was at least somewhat hopeful.

The ending of Final Ark is apocalyptic and somewhat depressing, and it’s pretty unlikely the project is going to get green-lighted for a follow up to let the characters set things right. I’ll be honest and say that I liked it by itself, but if there’s never a Captain Carrot project again then it was a lousy send-off for the characters.

“It also involved the heroes all failing spectacularly and losing their powers, among other things.”

So, fairly typical of modern DCU crap.

Yeah, but on the tail end of two issues that were actually fun, if severely over-compressed.

Terrific Whatzit

Shaw and Morrison have stated that this definitely wasn’t the end for Captain Carrot and there is more planned… Morrison even commented that he’d never write a story where the “badguys” would win. It’s all up to DC (and readers) if issues 4, 5, and 6 will ever see the light of day. Everything is pretty much plotted out, though.

I guess sales of the trade will be a deciding factor, too…

And it’s not like the entire Zoo Crew was turned into animals either. Pig-Iron is still on Earth-C (or 26, or whatever it is now), so between him and the Just-A-Lotta-Animals, it’s a pretty safe bet that the Zoo Crew can be brought back.

Worst case, I guess we can wait another 25 years for it…

Why yes, it IS the greatest news ever.

Plus, he mentioned the Green Team will appear, so… SOLD.

I’m sure there’s been better news in the history of the world, but this is certainly the best news of the twenty-first century.

I’m sure there’s been better news in the history of the world,

You know, up ’till now I always thought you were a pretty smart guy.

How could you be so wrong?

I dunno, you can;t capture lightning in a jar and that last Ambush Bug series wasn;t so hot.

Still, that first was something marvelous. OK, Cheeks, I’ll give you another shot!

MarkAndrew:

I’d say that the news that Hitler had been defeated was probably the best news the world has ever heard.

New Ambush Bug is just a very close second.

Third, of course, is a tie between the fall of the Berlin Wall and Wendy’s making the spicy chicken sandwich a permanent part of its menu.

I was going to avoid any miniseries in future but this year with Secret Invasion, Final Crisis and now this its tuning out harder than I imagined. REALLY good to have the Giffen/Loren Fleming team back together on one of the titles I’ve most enjoyed ever

I have mixed feelings about this. I loved every appearance of Ambush Bug (except for the terrible Supergirl issue) from his second appearance in DCCP right up to the end of Son of Ambush Bug. Somehow nothing since has hit that same standard for me.

Of course I’ll still buy the thing!

Yes!!! I loves me some Ambush Bug!!!

But, my next comment may get me kicked out of the comic book community forever. If so, then let it be…I stand by it.

Bring back The Heckler!!!

I believe Bill Reed included the Heckler on his list of reasons to love comics, so don’t worry - we love the Heckler here, too!

Hurrah for comics plotted, but not scripted, by Giffen!!

Brian - that’s the perfect way to put it. I often list “Keith Giffen & . . .” as one of my three favorite comics writers.

That was one of the very first…check that, it was the VERY first…Cronin Theories of Comics, Anthony! :)

Strange, in the 90s you couldn’t give away giffin’s humor books like Vext and Heckler and here are people coming out of the woodwork for Ambush Bug.

I don’t get it.

But yeah, I’ll be buying the TPB as soon as it’s out (I’m in Red China with no comic shops).
