An Odd Departure
- by Brian Cronin
- in General
Sean McKeever is leaving Birds of Prey after only five issues on the title. According to McKeever, it's strictly because he fell behind on deadlines, and had to cut either Birds of Prey or Teen Titans.
Pretty odd, though.

It's really unfortunate as well. McKeever's first two issues showed a ton of promise and were much more in line with Gail Simone's run than the few Tony Bedard issues were. I hope they find a worthy successor--though, truthfully, I think that McKeever is much more suited for Birds than his for Teen Titans.

I'm wondering if the book will just get axed down the line. The sales haven't dropped much so far, but I wonder if the long-time fans will get impatient.

I'm impatient.
Bedard sucked.
Finally, McKeever seemed to be bringing quality storytelling back to the title.
And now he's gone?
I don't really like his Teen Titans very much, either.

Does anybody like McKeever's Teen Titans?

I'm reminded of that transition period between Dixon and Simone, when some capable talents (Terry Moore and a Bro Hernandez) came and went without actually doing too much, and it seemed like the book was going to sink without its creator. Maybe whoever's next will wind up knocking it out of the park (Simone, after all, was still a largely unknown quantity when she started).

Hey, I'll write it. Lady superhero strike force! Sure!

I wasn't really a big fan of either of his issues, but I was still looking forward to seeing where he was going to go. Hopefully they can get a solid writer in place to take it from here.

To be honest, this is really disappointing. His first issue was a little on the goofy side with the transforming truck, but his second issue was a nice follow up and showed some promise as far as the series' direction. The fact that he's going to focus on Teen Titans sucks even more because I have really disliked his first few issues of TT and am on the verge of dropping it.
I wouldn't mind Bedard coming back to BoP or, of course, Gail, who is down to what, one book, now that she no longer writes Atom or Tranquility? I would happily see either of them writing it again.

Not for the current DC Comics. They've had a ton of lackluster announcements and early disappointing departures. The erratic releases of All Star Superman and All Star Batman, the botched and aborted runs of the Kubert brothers, the high profile relaunches of Wildstorm with top tier talents where they only got one issue in the can from Jim Lee, despite knowing that he's super-slow and already behind on All-Star Batman. I'm interested in seeing how they botch the Bagley acquisition next.

That's funny. I just cut Teen Titans.

I hope they can bring someone who'll last on the title.
My preference? Marc Andreyko. Manhunter was great, his character is already one of the BoP, and I think he'd be a good writer for Babs and Co.

I'm a bit disappointed in this. McKeever's Titans run has been okay, but outside of the inclusion of Blue Beetle, nothing about it is really grabbing my interest. We've only had two Birds issues out of McKeever so far, but I saw a lot of potential in his run (especially after the mediocre run by Tony "Captain Fill-in" Bedard).

In regards to M Bloom's comment above. I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds that almost everything Bedard does is essentially fill-in work.

Ironically, Bedard's been named as the replacement for McKeever on BOP.

I liked Bedard's fill-in stories, actually. So I'm willing to give him a chance to see how he handles an ongoing run on the book.

Based on DC's treatment of Bedard to date, I'm sure he's just a placeholder.

DC really needs to start casting a wider net in its search for creators. All they seem to be coming back with are cast-off lower-tier Marvel mediocrities like Bedard and Tieri.

I liked Bedard's Calculator v. Oracle issue (the only one of his I picked up), so I am willing to give him a shot.
I absolutely agree with Misia though; Andreyko would kick ass on the title I imagine.

Bedard's work on BoP was head and shoulders above McKeevers, and was much more in line with Simone's work.
How in the heck can you say otherwise is beyond me.

But when they do come out, they are so much better than Marvel's books that all is forgiven!

Bedard is quite a good writer when given a chance -- take a look at Negation or Route 666, or his run on Exiles. His previous efforts on Birds were done, I believe, with the knowledge that he had to act as a placeholder for the new team. Given a chance to actually develop longer-term plots, I think he'll do very nicely on the book.
However, I've got to agree that Andreyko would probably do a pretty good job, too.

Anyone else think they're just treading water until Simone returns?

And don't forget all the starts and stops with Wonder Woman over the last few years.
