THIS ARTIST IS GOOD

Thrill to the coolness that is Colleen Coover!!!

I think that it is only fair for Ms. Coover to be forced to reduce her coolness output by at least 25%.

It just isn’t right for this much awesomeness to reside within one artist.

COVER THEME GAME

As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.

A cool point to the first person to figure it out!

Good luck!

Who would win in a fight – the Punisher or Power Pack?

THE COVER GAME

This week’s game is as follows…

Find me a comic cover that features a character with a normal head having his or her head enlarged to ridiculous proportions, such as the covers featured in my Top Five Large Head Covers (and you can’t use any of them!)!

Here is an example (which you can’t use!)….

Remember, only one cover per commenter!

Good luck!

Cover theme – they were all created by creators who no longer work in the industry.

Cover Theme Game: Moon Knight, Ghoul and Golden Archer were all cab drivers.

Cover theme – they were all created by creators who no longer work in the industry.

I meant worked on (written/drawn), not actually created (although that may be the case), although buttlers answer sounds more like it’s right.

COVER THEME:

A shot in the half-light, here. At best.

I remember you being called out earlier this week (on “Judging Marvel…Covers”?) for not knowing that a Sudyam MOON KNIGHT cover was an homage to a same-numbered Sinc cover. The very MK cover you are featuring now.

So, based on this thin lead alone: all three covers have been homaged? In same-named series? In same-numbered issues (as I believe was the case with MK)? All/some of the above?

Possibly none.

Thanks for playing the home game!

Oh, yeah — OR, they’re cab drivers.

Like I read Malibu. C’mon! :)

Punisher or Power Pack? Depends. If it’s Ennis’ Punisher, then it would end in his favor- and not be pretty. But if it’s anybody else writing it, then Power Pack for sure. They have the powers, the numbers, and the fact that ol’ Frank couldn’t even handle one superpowered kid when Molly forced him to write the greatest Punisher War Journal entry ever…which I’m paraphrasing but I’m pretty sure it went something like:

“Punisher war Journal entry- Aaaaaaaaa…”

For “who is it?” I’m gonna say Lady Lark on clue 4, but I only thought of her because she’s prominently depicted above.

I think we all knew if anyone was going to get in on the big-head action, it would be Jimmy Olsen: http://www.comics.org/graphics/covers/1027/400/1027_4_022.jpg

I gotta say it – Wanda’s accent/dialogue in Coover’s X-MEN: FIRST CLASS page is freaking awesome.

You see that Flash cover up there? The one where he has a big head? I live with a guy who has a head that size. Seriously. The worst thing about it is, I don’t even WANT to live here. I’ve tried leaving but the motherfucker’s head keeps blocking the doorway. Any suggestions?

I too got Lady Lark on #4. (After #1 my first guess was the Golden Age Vigilante.)

Man, I heart Colleen Coover’s work something awesome. I met her last year at SDCC, and she’s one of the nicest people around, too. She drew a wonderful sketch of fuzzy, furry Bully in my copy of Banana Sunday. Thanks for spotlighting her!

Ditto on all the Coover love. She’s awesome.

I’m articulate and eloquent.

Who Is It?: Lady Lark on #3, when I ruled out Dazzler.

Cover game: How about Evolvo Lad? http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=18576&zoom=4

It’s a toss-up whether he counts as “a character with a normal head,” but he did sometimes appear in an “unevolved” (normal) state before changing to his “super-evolved”/big-headed or unevolved Cro-Magnon state.

I didn’t know Lady Lark could fly.

Greg beat me to it! So instead, here’s a more recent version of Evolvo. He’s on the right, changing into an ape.

Does this count as a giant head entry?
http://www.zonanegativa.com/2007/5910.jpg

It sure seemed that way to me when I first saw that cover.

Okay, here’s a more serious entry for the giant head cover game: JLA #7 http://comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=16486&zoom=4

Gotta love Green Arrow in that one.

Wally West this time. Seems like gigantic head growth is part of being a Flash…

Perhaps I should have said “Skylark,” which Lady Lark started calling herself after she inherited Blue Eagle’s wings.

Power Pack. I mean, Katie can force Frank to give up all dignity by herself, as shown in their crossover. After that, The Punisher’s just an embaressed guy with a gun. Not a huge threat.

I guess it’s unlikely, but I would love to see a collection of all of Coover’s “X-Men First Class” back-up stories. Better still (and even more unlikely), they should just have her draw the whole book.

Yeah, well, so was John Wilkes Booth,

Just an embarrassed guy with a gun, I mean.

You know, I thought “Here comes Brian with the hyperbole”…but no, you’re right. Colleen Coover is awesometastically good.

This drawing (off her website) sealed the deal for me

Wow!

Oh darnit, I wish I could figure out the coding to include pictures in comments. Anyway, go here:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1231/1376439300_b9a46082ea.jpg

Again. Wow.

Yeah, I would have definitely included

Awesometastic!!

but I saw she mentioned it was a gift for her husband, so I felt a bit weird putting it amongst the other, more public stuff.

Great drawing.

Cover Challenge:
All three covers feature a hero who continued heroics using the same MO after death. Ghoul is obvious. Moon Knight died and was ressurected by the moon god. And Tom Thumb’s inventions kept perpetuating even without him directing them.

Who Is It?
After eliminating Dazzler, I came up with Songbird. Wasn’t she a singer when she was teamed with Aquarian?

Theno

Oh yeah, sorry – the cab driver one is the correct one!

Woo hoo! Glad I took a hack at it!

I thought of Songbird too.

She was also, I believe, part of an all female wrestling team back in the day, which fits the “entertainer” criteria.

Power Pack with the win, purely because there is no way the Punisher would shoot a bunch of kids.

Hey, I’ll give the theme game a go.

They’re all DC knockoffs.

Ghoul kinda looks like Swampy, Lady Lark is Black Canary, and Moon Knight is a Batman riff.

Do I win.

Actually Dazzler fits every criteria of the “Who is it?” although you have to fugde a tiny bit on #5. She was (1) a singer, (2) a member of the X-Men and Excalibur, (3) recently gained the ability to fly in New Excalibur (EVERY character with energy powers eventually learns to fly) (4) converts sound into light (they used to make a much bigger deal about this – the louder the ambient noise, the more powerful she got) and (5) was a member of the X-Men in the Age of Apocalypse alternate Earth. (She was also a mentor to the X-Babies in the Mojoverse and Ultimate Dazzler is a member of the Ultimate X-Men, but I think the AoA thing is the least fudgy)

Howdy just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your content seem to be running off the screen in Chrome. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know. The design and style look great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon. Cheers
