[...] I was reading this week’s Perhapanauts Annual #1, and considering doing a review on it. At the time, I considered, “Would I recommend this comic?” Ultimately, I figured I would not. I liked the comic okay, but it really was not good enough for me to say it was actually GOOD, or that I would recommend other people to read it (mostly because it seemed like it spent way too much of the comic re/introducing the cast - I bet the ongoing series will be a lot better). As I’ve said in the past, a “Recommended” review from me is not me saying that I liked the comic book. It is me saying that I think the comic is “good,” and that most people would (should?) enjoy it. I “like” plenty of books that aren’t good, and sometimes I don’t particularly like books that I think ARE good (that happens a lot less frequently). However, when I found myself thinking that I would not recommend the Perhapanauts Annual #1, it occurred to me that how could I not recommend Perhapanauts Annual #1, but give New Exiles #2 a slight recommendation? New Exiles #2 was basically in the same class of comic - a pretty good comic book. I should not have recommended it, and I’ve since edited it in to the review. So, sorry about that folks! Not a big deal, I know, but it irked me, so I figured I’d mention it. I’ll try to avoid such errors in the future! [...]

with the exception of Psylocke FINALLY getting a new look, this book was total crap.

i gave it two issues now & that's all i'll do. sorry folks, but i think it's time for Claremont to go out to pasture.

oh, and for the record...i thought Exiles was at it's best under Bedard!

I did. It may have seemed better because I'd just read some Claremont issues and Winick's dialogue was much better in comparison. It still stands up as mostly original, I think. I don't know that he'd established his pattern of killing off characters in their first story arc, so that felt new. It was a great rolling What If crossover with some good characters. I didn't realize how much it felt like a super-hero Real World series until I found out he'd been on the Real World, but I didn't really have a problem with it.

The thing is, Winick's original run on Exiles wasn't that great. The premise was solid enough to forgive a lot, but the dialogue was stiff and the plots were predictable. At least, that's how I felt when I looked back over it. Give it a re-read yourself and see what you think.

Darn it, Brian, I'm making a joke about the publishers we review here! Okay, so it won't be original, but I'm keeping it in there, even at the risk of beating a dead horse!

Forgot to make my other point: would it have made a difference if Winick (one N) had written the relaunch? I know he gets flogged here regularly, but I thought he was good on the original run, and I think he's handled it better than anyone. Wishful fan-casting, I know, but I want this comic to be good again!

Ditto. I dropped Exiles like a warm turd when Claremont came on, although it was already starting to stink before then. Seriously, how did Beak make it into the book to begin with? I don't understand the point of relaunching it other than it was tanking and this was supposed to revive interest. Thumbing through it at the store and reading these reviews, I don't see a reason to pick it up again, no matter how many course corrections Claremont tries to make.

The things that have been done to Exiles over the years have always saddened me. I came onto that book at inception, where Winick was writing it and McKone and Calafiore were handling art. I saw what was a crackerjack open-ended premise; Marvel's "What If?" happening around a solid group of interesting and well-fleshed out characters. It never had to worry about crossovers, it could ignore all other continuity and create as much of it's own as it liked. Characters could die. Change could matter.

Then Winick left, they gave it to Chuck Austen, who dragged it into continuity because he was writing Uncanny at the time. Then Tony "The Book-killer" Bedard, others, and now Claremont, who is far past his prime. I stopped buying long ago, but every time I see the book on the shelves feel a slight pang at how poorly a good book was treated.
