GBC - I have to say I also found the cigar comment offensive. Perhaps that kind of comment can made less explicitly to get your point across.

Let's try to keep the corner not only snark free but friendly to all genders.

I'm getting called immature by someone who changes people's names into grade-school insults?

The irony on this guy!

All right, guys. Let's take it down a notch. Apodaca, what got me upset was the crudity of G.B.C.'s comments, and that they went on several times. I could ignore one comment, but it seemed like he was really trying to make a point, and I just didn't think it was appropriate here (especially the cigar thing). Joshschr, thanks for the support, but I didn't take Apodaca's comments personally or get that upset by them. G.B.C. - I'm definitely not a Republican, zealous or otherwise - like I said above, what got under my skin was the crude comments. Again, I just didn't think it was appropriate here. 'Nuff said, as far as I'm concerned - let's all just move along.

I'm not sure what it is I've done to offend you, Craig. I have studiously avoided the use of harsh profanity in order to avoid upsetting other posters who might not share my views on freedom of speech. I have not directed any insulting or offensive comments specifically in your direction. I really can't see what it is you don't like about me. The only thing I can think of is that you are a somewhat overzealous Republican, desperate to defend the virtue of one Mrs Nancy Regean. If that's the case, then the best of luck to you. Hope Nancy appreciates the effort.

Far more offensive, in my opinion, was joshschr's reference to Apodaca as 'Apodicka' and his -so far unproven- assertion that Apodaca has his head up his ass.

Joshschr, such snarky behaviour is not welcome here in Snark-Free Corner. With your potty-mouth and casual disregard for your fellow poster's feelings, you are one of those people who ruin things for the rest of us, who come here to share our thoughts and opinions on topics such as 'Are Fictional Presidents Better Than Real Ones'. Frankly, I've had quite enough of people like you spoiling our fun. Why don't you just fuck off?

Pete Ross was picked because Lex pulled a Dan Quayle. He wanted a good looking cipher who would not over shadow him and was good enough to rub some family values wholesomeness off on him (especially since Lex was unmarried).

If you really want to get cute, consider the electoral math: Luthor is essentially a big city North Eastern guy, a businessman, a self made millionaire, a technocrat, and a pro-humanity kind of guy. This gets him the urban yuppie vote, the white collar liberal vote, and the conservative business vote. Ross gets him the rural vote and values voters, plus is photogenic and has that cute wife and baby and he's from the Midwest so he can poach the south (in theory).

Luthor would have been smarter to pick either Frank Rock or Amanda Waller to be his VP.

Craig, ignore Apodicka. He's 22. He'll pull his head out of his ass one of these days...

I like the flexibility of real and in-universe presidents. Real president worked well in 10 Nights of KGBeast, but fake president worked very well the President Luthor arc. I'm not sure where I stand on W showing up in Ultimates.

On the real vs. fake President question, I generally prefer real. When I'm reading superhero comics, I like to imagine I'm reading about a world more or less like my own, only with the addition of superheroes. Having a fake President in there is SUCH a break from reality as I know it that it takes me right out of the story.

I don't mind it when they just refer to a "Mr. President" & play it coy with his identity, though. I kind of miss that, actually. It seems so Silver Age-y.

And the President in the DC Universe is E.G. Marshall in a bad toupee.

Oh wait, that was in Superman II. My bad.

I think that the DC president is named Horne. I tried looking him up on Wikipiedia, but he didn't have an entry. I think he took over right after Luthor. I would like to get some backstory on him, since he has shown up in a few comics.
I like the fictious presidents. It lets writers comment on politics without actually condoning or blaming actual figures. Luthor as president had so much potential, just as Stark as Secretary of Defense.

Ronald Reagan WAS the President in the late 1980's. He was President from January 20, 1981, through January 20, 1989. Maybe you meant "Nixon" was president in the late 1980's (as depicted in Watchmen). Or were you refering to the Reagan that was President in the "future" world of Dark Knight Returns, which was published in the mid-1980's?

don’t you think the Snark-Free Corner can be actually free of snarky, offensive, insulting comments

I think that's fair, and I try to keep from being too snarky in the comments for this column. But, I think it's quite an overreaction to call for his being banned from the entire blog, and I don't really see why his comments bother you so much. Yes, they're crude, but there wasn't anything in there that seemed offensive or insulting, to me. I guess I just don't get why you seem to have taken personal offense to the post. Perhaps you can elaborate on what about the post bothered you personally?

Also, isn't it easy enough to just scroll past certain comments?

Isn't picking Pete Ross as a running mate something Luthor would do only because his ego wouldn't let him beleive he could lose no matter who his running mate is and because he know it would piss off Superman?

The closest thing to an explanation I can remember seeing was a flashback in a Superman Secret Files issue (maybe from 2004). It revealed that (and I'm going from my memory here) that Lex helped Pete Ross's hospitalized father while they were growing up in Smallville, and Pete became the VP as a favor to Lex. I assume Lex appointed him in the first place to get back at Superman though.

Have a good day.
John Cage

The closest thing to an explanation I can remember seeing was a flashback in a Superman Secret Files issue (maybe from 2004). It revealed that (and I’m going from my memory here) that Lex helped Pete Ross’s hospitalized father while they were growing up in Smallville, and Pete became the VP as a favor to Lex. I assume Lex appointed him in the first place to get back at Superman though.

Have a good day.
Beacause he was Superman's childhood pal and a minor sheild against super-smear campaigns?

Cover theme: Given the presidential theme of today’s SFC, is it that all of the covers feature a character who shares a name with a president whose head is on Mount Rushmore: Ted (Kord/Roosevelt); George (Harkness/Washington) and Tom (Black Tom Cassidy/Jefferson)?
Correct!

I can always count on you, Rob, to be on my wavelength! :)

RE: 35.DanLarkin

You get no arguement from me on your points. Fixing the story into a specific era isn't necessarily a BAD thing in some cases. I'm only saying that using real presidents actively contradicts the publisher's B.S. about their timelines and ties the story to a time period.

Yeah, but those other Captain Britains didn't come before Brian. The corps are all simultaneous differing iterations of the same basic idea on parallel earths. Others have taken over the mantle of Earth 616's Captain from Brian for brief periods, but he was the first and true Captain of 616 (and for once I'm really specifically mean Earth 616-- this is how it got its name, after all.)
