When Ditko left, Lee was quite comfortable to just do a little soap opera, bring back one of the many already-established good villains, and let his dialog and Romita's pencils carry the book. (Which, don't get me wrong, still resulted in some great Spider-Man comics. But Ditko's stuff was better than great, it was legendary.)
