Is there a more popular character never to have a series?
- by Brian Cronin
- in General
I was a bit surprised by the recent announcement that Cyborg was getting a news series.

Not that he's getting a new series, but that he never had one before. I mean, once I read that part, I thought, "Oh, right, that's true," but still, pretty surprising, no?
Is there a more popular character than Cyborg to NEVER receive their own mini-series? Even Invisible Woman had that Storms mini-series with Johnny. Wasp? J. Jonah Jameson? Fire and Ice? Is Geo-Force popular? I know I'm forgetting some great example, so let me know!

I was going to say Angel, but it seems he's getting his own miniseries the same month as Cyborg. Starfire, maybe? Monica Rambeau?

What about Mr. Terrific? He's never had his own series, has he? Who doesn't love Mr. Terrific?
Actually, how about Alfred? You'd think at some point in the last thirty-years-or-so since miniseries became popular there'd have been an "Alfred has some solo adventure" mini.

Bart's had his own ongoing for a while now, but Homer hasn't, if we're talking about non-superheroes, too.
Stephanie "Spoiler" Brown is still popular (or is it more popular than ever?) and she hasn't had a spotlight.
And, perhaps most importantly, the great and mighty Groot has yet to grab a starring role. And that's a shame. I'm completely serious.

Looking at the Top 100 DC/Marvel lists, I'd guess that Power Girl both beats Cyborg in popularity and has never properly had a series.
(Mr. Terrific had an ongoing mini this year.)
If we include Marvel, I'm sure there's a nontrivial number of X-Men who qualify. Has Kitty Pryde ever had a series, for example?

Kitty Pryde has had several of her own, including Mekanix and Kitty Pryde: Agent of SHIELD. If you count shared titles, there were also two Pryde and Wisdom miniseries.
If you don't count shared titles, I'm pretty certain Jean Grey has never had one to herself.

Alfred had his own 6-8 page-ish feature in an anthology book back in the forties.
Still, yer right - There's (surprisingly) never been an Alfred solo comic.

I think Chip Kidd talked about a series where Alfred goofily solved mysteries in the 365 Superheroes book.
I'm not doing too much research now, but I'm pretty sure Darkseid never had his own title. Most of the villains did not for that matter, only the ones that sort of reach that level of popularity where their eyebrow will sell 100k.
Jeez, Cyborg has his first cover, and its drawn by Rob Liefield. I don't think robots can have muscles like that... I mean, those are robot parts.... not skin tight silver, right?

I thought Cyborg was just getting a one-shot.

Jean Grey, technically, has never had a solo adventure series. There have been minis with her and Cyclops, or her and another character doing stuff. But I don't believe she's ever had one alone.
Has Zatanna ever had one?

Alfred did have this: http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=57306&zoom=4.
Power Girl had a miniseries in the mid-80s. And Spoiler can't really be popular, can she?

Zatanna had the 7 Soldiers mini, plus at least one series in the 80s, and I think a Vertigo book.

Power Girl had a 4-issue mini back in '88 or so.
Is Kilowog more popular?

The Vision's had at least one solo miniseries.

Vision had a 4 part mini a few years back. Plus the Vision and Scarlet WItch titles.
I don't think Wasp has ever had a series. Has Colossus ever had one?

Perhaps we should be looking at more modern people also, although I guess looking at Molly Hayes/Layla Miller/Squirrel Girl feels like cheating (and I'm not sure if any of them are truly more popular than Cyborg).

It's not quite the same thing as a solo series, but Cyborg was cover featured in a couple of issues of Teen Titans Spotlight

and, earlier, the first issue of Tales of the New Teen Titans http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=36419&zoom=4

Colossus had a mini three years ago, where he and other descendants of Rasputin duked it out for some sort of ultimate power. Sadly, I'm not making this up. The thing is best left forgotten.

Ken Lashley drew that not Liefeld.

Thok, I would have to buy a Layla/Molly mini-series. Squirrel Girl would be welcome too.
Get on that, Marvel.

Has Psylocke ever had a solo series? She was really popular for a few years.
Most of the Legion (including Brainiac 5, I think) have never had solo series.
Is Cyborg really that popular? I don't recall getting that impression (at least prior to the Teen Titans cartoon).

I'm quite sure the Beast has never had a solo series since he became super popular in Avengers (I know he became fuzzy in his own feature in Amazing Adventures, but you'd think he'd score something since then).
I'm talking solo series. He did star with Wonder Man in Avengers Two, and of course, Beauty and the Beast, featuring a romance with the Dazzler. Never read that one, though.

There was a really terrible Beast miniseries in the mid-90s. Karma, Cannonball,Viper, and Spiral were involved- why it was decided this would be a good idea for a Beast solo series, I have no idea.

In Marvel, I count Polaris, Forge, Cannonball, Sunspot, Siryn, Moonstar, Warpath, Starfox, Namorita, Rage and Moondragon as never having had a series.
In DC, we have Fire, Ice, Vixen, Nuklon/Atom Smasher, Mr. Terrific, Jade, GeoForce and Raven

This is a great topic. Every time you think you have someone nailed down, it turns out they did have their own comic. Is the answer really a Legionnaire? Lana Lang? Wasp?

If Jubilee had her own series then why not Moondragon? If bald telepathic martial artists with bad tempers can't be interesting then who can?

This is just a limited series, right. Shouldn't we only count on going series...because eventually every character seems to be getting an one-shot or limited series....even Bob Agent of Hydra.
If you really want to count a four issue limited series as a "Series"......the Vision has had two...one written by Bob Harras and the second by Geoff Johns.

Well, Moondragon recently became an actual dragon, and then died. For now, at least.
So I think that kind of hampers her having her own series.

Is Cyborg popular?
How about Kilowog?
Stone Free
February 25, 2008 at 9:18 am
I seem to be interpreting the question a little differently than everyone else - by "popular," I assumed Cronin meant "popular both in comics and in other media."
Cyborg was in a late Super Friends incarnation, I believe, and had a Super Powers figure. That, plus the Teen Titans cartoon, PLUS the Smallville version of the character, means that Cyborg has appeared outside of comics quite a bit more than most characters.
So if you look at it that way, he's way more popular (that is, widely known) than, say, G'nort or Moondragon.

What about Wovlerine? He's the most popular X-Men, so you'd think marvel Would give him at least a miniseries. Good to know they don't want to be seen as milking a cash cow too much.
(Exits cave.)
Oh, wait. Never mind.

Also possibly illegal, since at least two of those characters are underage.
