I’m sorry we didn’t get a chance to talk yesterday at the store — I was hoping you would stick around a few minutes (I hope you didn’t think I was ignoring you!!!)

What a great post — I’m ignorant about certain aspects of American comics and I feel like I’ve just received a great lesson about them right here. Thanks for sharing!

Very good piece, Mark, and excellent observations on the creator/fan relationship. We’ve all got our favorites, and they all speak to us in exceptional and enlightening ways. It’s a two-way street, though, and we feel compelled to give back– which you have done here. Well done.

Ohh, man, you put me right back in that day, you really do. What a shock that was, and so strange. Steve Gerber dead? Sorry, don’t know what you’re talking about, please try to speak sense. Steve Gerber dead, indeed. Well if we’re voting about that, I’ll be providing some opposition to the motion. Steve? Dead? Bah.

All this without knowing him. But then I can’t help that anymore than you can: it’s that reciprocation thing you identify, that made all his stories work, that’s what drives this as well.

I wonder how Mary’s holding up, too. Funny, these folks have all got twenty years on me, but in my head they’re not that, they’re Howard and Bev, they’re twenty-five tops, and they’re not ready for this.

I liked your Teacher/Student thing. Also the link to Tim — well, Steve already delivered his own best eulogy, of course. And It’s good to see it.

Nice piece, Mark. And there’s a space ready for your link on my sidebar whenever you get done. It does suck, mightily. Personally I’ve found it useful to read all the Gerber interviews that are floating about the web these days, that I never saw before. Dunno why that’s helpful to me, but it is.

It’s a weird relationship, the one between a fan and a creator – we mourn for them when they’re gone yet it’s a strange kind of mourning (at least, for me); most times we don’t truly know these people but we feel a real loss and it’s always hard to take.

I was heartbroken when Steve died, his work was a real part of my childhood (as well as now)and I related to him, much like you and many others, did.

For what it’s worth, I think he’d be deeply touched by your tribute.

Very touching. I can relate to your feelings in a way because I missed Chris Farley when he died back in the 90′s. I was a young kid who liked his movies and his work on SNL, I had never met him, but still felt really sad when he died. Probably not the same thing you’re feeling, but I can at least begin to understand it.

I hope you feel better and of course you will have his work with you always. You can keep his memory alive by exposing more people to his work. I know I’m going to try to pick up the Howard the Duck stuff now.

NOTE: Sorry to compare Farley’s drug overdose death to Mr. Gerber’s, but it was the closest thing I had.
