Welcome to the latest (belated) installment of your breath of snark free air!

All X-MEN EDITION!!

Enjoy!

SNARK FREE DEBATE

Cyclops and Emma Frost – Good idea or bad idea?

Since the conclusion of Grant Morrison’s New X-Men run, a good deal of the situations he set up are no longer in play – but one of the more striking examples that IS still in play is the relationship between Cyclops and Emma Frost, and in fact, later writers have decided to play this relationship up even MORE than Morrison did.

So the question is, do you think this pairing is a good idea?

On the one hand, Emma has certainly opened up different sides to Scott Summers’ personality that had been left untapped in the past.

On the other hand, Emma has tried to kill him in the past, and has done some pretty messed up stuff to the X-Men over the years.

On the one hand, Jean Grey gave this relationship her telepathic blessing, by pushing Scott to Emma after Jean’s death, when Scott was probably going to let Emma go, as he was so torn over his wife’s death.

On the other hand, Jean DID just die – so that’s a bit icky.

That’s your topic!

Pick your sides, people!!!

And remember, snark free corner here!

COVER THEME GAME

As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.

A cool point to the first person to figure it out!

Good luck!

THE COVER GAME

This week’s game is as follows…

Find me a comic cover that features Banshee and Gambit…

X-Men #200 does not count!

Here is an example (which you can’t use!)….

Remember, only one cover per commenter!

Good luck!

WHO IS IT?

Remember, tell me who it is and what number clue gave it away!

1. This character has been dead/is currently dead (not telling which one – ah the life of the X-Men, where “this character has been dead” does not limit things at all – that is not snark, by the by!)

Re: SNARK FREE DEBATE
It’s not something I would have chosen to do but it’s actually led to some pretty good comics.
And isn’t that what really matters?

Re: COVER THEME GAME
All those issues take place somewhere in Asia

Re: SNARK FREE CHALLENGE
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I like Cat Beast. It’s a much more dynamic design than any other he’s had.

-Twilight

I have no idea if she’s currently dead or alive but clue #3 made me think of Betsy Braddock.

I’ll second the love for Beast’s cat form. I know some artists had trouble drawing it at first, but I think it’s a nice, sophisticated look for him. Also gives him a few extra abilities too (i.e. some more heightened senses and I think the ability to see in the dark).

As for the Cyclops/Emma Frost relationship… I liked Scott and Jean, but I think Emma can be a very unique foil for Scott, as Ed Brubaker, Greg Pak and G-Mozz himself have shown.

Who is it: Sharon Friedlander, #3 suspected, #4 clinched it and #5 confirmed it wasn’t Tom Corsi

Oh, and as a huge Cyclops fan who grew up sanctifying the Scott and Jean relationship, I love the Scott/Emma pairing. I think they both bring out interesting characteristics in each other (Cyclops get a little edgier, Emma has to cop to her good side).

I prefer Beast to be furry/animalistic in some way; the X-Men proper have so few physically altered mutants, they need all they can get. It’s hard to sell the whole mutant thing as anything other than a blessing when you get
A. a cool power because of it
B. a handsome physique and the ability to hang with supermodels.

So Beast’s animal appearance helps along the notion that not all mutations are awesome.

That said, I didn’t really care when Cat Beast showed up, but I wouldn’t care if he went back to Ape Beast (except on the general principle of having one more Morrison element being done away with).

Cat beast is Fab.
Especially when he goes slightly crazy, like when he’s chasing Glob down a motorway, or when he took on Danger.
The only thing I don’t like it is when An artist makes him look a bit too Extreme, and the fact that he can’t play the guitar anymore. That made me sad.
Poor hank.

From a consistancy standpoint, it IS sort of weird that Scott’s with the person who empowered Mastermind to basically muck with the Jean/Phoenix entity, indirectly causing her death.

But the stories have been good. So I’ve got no idea what to tell you. Scott’s never made the world’s best decisions, I guess.

I dislike Scott Summers. He treated his exes like dirt. Colleen Wing gave him a key to her appartment, and he never called her back. His fling with Lee Forrester was scummy, leaving he the second they got back to dry land. He dropped Maddie like a hot potato. Fantasized about Betsy, psybered (like that word? I do!) with Emma, and routinely made Jean feel like dirt.

Emma Frost is the best thing that could happen to him, if for no other reason that if he screws up, he knows she’ll eat his brain.

The fear keeps him in line.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, blue ape Beast should come back. I’m slightly bias as I was an Avengers fan first so that’s the Beast I fell in love with. With that said the cat version came about as a secondary mutation thing in Morrison’s run. However, the blue furry version was actually his second mutation. He drank a serum that gave him the grey then blue fur. So the blue cat is his third mutation really. Beast was more than just the super genius/funny man he was acrobatic strong man as well. Now that he’s a cat he has enhanced senses and reflexes rather than the dexterity. So by moving his look away from that of Wolverine’s they just brought his abilities closer. To me the Blue cat is not Beast, but another character.

I think Emma has turned out to be a good thing for Scott. I wasn’t fond of the idea at first, but it’s really brought out a lot of great stuff from both characters.

Cover theme game: All three issues were penciled by foreign artists. Salvador Larroca and Carlos Pacheco are both from Spain, Leinil Yu is from the Philippines.

I’m partial to the blue furry ape Beast, myself. It’s what I grew up with in the books, and the cat Beast just looks weird to me.

Got Sharon Friedlander at #4.

I’m sorry and I apologize.

I misread the question. It’s 1:30AM and I can’t sleep, so thinking not entirely straight. That said I still prefer the blue ape look. I think the main reason is there are so many inconsistencies amongst artiest and how draw the cat form.

Also Uncanny X-Men 273 for the cover game

Gambit is a little small but there!

This is actually the first character I guessed. Man, I’m sad. I miss Sharon and Tom Corsi. DEMON BEAR!!!!!

I think the issues with Emma’s villainous past apply more broadly to her presence in the X-Men, in general, and if it’s cool for her to be an X-Man, it’s cool for her to be with Cyclops.

Also, since when has a guy like Cyclops (introspective and critical) ever had good judgement about women?

I *love* the Scott/Emma dynamic. That being said, I won’t scream bloody murder if/when Scott and Jean get back together again someday. But Emma Frost may be one of the most interesting Marvel characters of the last decade.

As for Cat Beast, I love it when he’s drawn by an artist that understands Quitely’s design. But I’ve seen some terrible drawings, too, making me wonder if the old look isn’t just easier to draw. Also, there’s a significant change in the character when he’s in Cat-beast mode; I just can’t see him hanging out with Wonder Man as he used to.

Wasn’t Betsy Braddock a nurse?

For the Cover Theme, all of the covers feature someone who has been both a member of the X-Men and an enemy of the X-Men during their existence.

Havoc has been a member of the X-Men and the Brotherhood.

Cannonball fought against the New Mutants (pre-Xmen) in their first OGN.

Emma Frost was initially a member of the Hellfire Club before joining the X-Men.

I’ll give credit to the “foreign artists” one, even though I think simply “foreign artists” is too broad of a theme. If they were all Spanish artists or all Filipino artists, then maybe that would work as a theme, but there are a LOT of non-American artists out there. But it’s clever enough, so I’ll give a cool point for it.

As for “they all fought the X-Men at one point,” I dunno. Remember, Havok was undercover in the Brotherhood, and as you say, Cannonball didn’t actually fight the X-Men.

Meanwhile, Twilight’s “the covers are all set in Asia” is on the money, although, they were all set in one specific Asian country. An extra cool point for the country in question!

I can’t stand Emma. There, I said it. I know that bad guys reform and join the team in Marvel all the time, but Emma’s a divisive presence. Hell, she doesn’t even act like she wants to be a good guy. I know, she’s a teacher, she cares about her students, blah blah blah. I never read Generation X, so she has no redeeming qualities in my eyes. Kitty’s speech to her in Astonishing #2 sums up my attitude towards Emma quite nicely. And for God’s sake, woman, you work at a school — put some clothes on!

I prefer the ape-Beast to the cat-Beast. There’s enough animalistic tracking-characters as it is; they don’t need another. They’ve got enough “mutant angst” characters as well; I like Hank when he’s happy, well adjusted, and amazingly brilliant.

Took me until #5 to get Sharon Friedlander. The X-Men have only had so many school nurses, after all.

COVER THEME: Is it HongKong?

Philip Trostler

March 4, 2008 at 11:43 am

Havok, Cannonball, and Emma Frost all have or had siblings on the X-Teams, Cyclops, Husk, Adrienne Frost.

It’s China, but Hong Kong is close enough (and at least one of the three IS set in Hong Kong)!!

I dunno – Adrienne Frost wasn’t really ever on a team, was she?

She was just headmistress for a few issues.

Although, that WOULD be a really good Cover Theme in the future, Philip (once hopefully everyone forgets you suggested it ;)) – to have a cover featuring, say, Adrienne on one cover, Vulcan on one and, like, Sabretooth Count Abyss on another one, and have it be your answer!

Scott and Emma are a far more interesting couple than Scott and Jean ever were.

Dan beat me to it. I would only add that the factor of difference is several orders of magnitude.

I like Cat Beast. The form is regal yet still emphasizes his dual nature of intellectual trapped by his body and instincts.

I’m also glad to no longer confuse his silhouette with Wolverine and that he lost that bizarre hairstyle.

I’ve never been a fan of putting Emma in the X-Men, period. I always thought her reformation seemed forced and unconvincing, sort of a “we need a new edgy character in the X-Titles, so the White Queen suddenly feels remorseful about all the terrible things she did! But not, y’know, too remorseful, because, hey, edgy.” Sort of like what they did with Sabretooth, except that it didn’t take there because it was immensely unpopular with readers. :) So every development that has made her more a part of the team has seemed less convincing and more forced, because I still just fundamentally can’t see her as a person with any natural empathy at all. She’s a selfish, horrible person. That’s how she’s written, even now. I don’t see why a person like that would be in the X-Men.

And ape beast, period. It’s one of the all-time classic character designs, timeless and elegant and just sharp as hell. If I were writing a Beast comic, he’d be in ape form by the end of issue #1.

I very surprised that I’ve enjoyed Scott & Emma as a couple in Whedon’s run. Never had too much trouble accepting it. Perhaps it helps that I wasn’t reading the X-Books for years.

And I LOVE the Ape-Beast. That’s the one I grew up on, and that’s the one that will always seem like the “real” Beast to me. John Cassiday made me grow to like the cat design, though.

I grew up with “ape” Beast, too, but while the change to the cat form was a shock, at first, it’s grown on me. Beast’s former, uh, form didn’t really have much to offer. Maybe if he really had looked like an ape instead of, you know, “Blueverine,” I’d want him to go back, but for me to cry for a return to an older version of a character just because it’s the one I saw when I was a kid? That’s “OMD/BND” territory right there, and that ain’t cool…

Scott/Emma got me interested in them as characters for the first time.

“She’s a selfish, horrible person. That’s how she’s written, even now. I don’t see why a person like that would be in the X-Men.”

Self-preservation?

I’ll take the Avengers-era look for Beast over kittycat Beast any day, but then I was never a huge fan of the Beauty and the Beast TV series.

I for one welcome Emma to the X-Men and hope she survives the experience.

Ape-Beast was boring and ugly. Get over it.

question about the who is it game. When someone dies as an adult, don’t they look different when they were babies?

I like human beast (with the big feet).

I think Scott and Emma is great. Scott and Jean were just so boring.

Beast was still human looking when I was growing up. I remember when he was turned into blue ape Beast and I was not pleased.

As for cat beast, I much prefer the majestic lion look. I hate it whenever an artist follows Mr. Cassaday’s design. Lion Beast wouldn’t have appeared fat and frowsy compared to Dark Beast in the multi-part “Endangered Species”.

As for the current version of Scott, I think that he and Emma deserve each other.
