Cue the Angry Blue Beetle Fans

So John Rogers is leaving Blue Beetle (although, he says he may return in the future, as you can see from this nice Newsarama interview), and Will Pfeifer is taking it over for at least the first story arc.
Rogers mentions in the interview that he is taking over an ongoing series post-Final Crisis. Rogers describes it as:
[I]t’s really cool, and I think fans of Blue Beetle will see it as a match.
Guesses anyone?

I’m really bummed about Rogers leaving.
Pfeifer is a pretty good choice as he’s very good with characters and voice and what not, but Blue Beetle is such a special book.
I think it has to be either Flash (which has a strong family dynamic like Blue Beetle and which he co-wrote some back up stories for last year) or Booster Gold (as Johns announced he’s leaving with issue 12 and Katz may or may not go with him).

I’m really bummed about this too. Probably even moreso than hearing about Bret Favre retiring earlier today. Rogers has done such an amazing job of building a believable and likable main character that also had the burden of having to overcome the pro-Ted Kord bias that a lot of fans felt. No small job for a newbie comic book writer. He also managed to create one of the best, if not THE best, supporting cast in comics. Rogers is a huge reason why BB is my favorite comic right now.
I know sales are weak on BB, but I hope they stay strong enough to support the book for a long time to come (long enough for Rogers to return anyway…he he…)
As for Will Pfeiffer…I’m not as sold on his writing as other people seem to be. Yes, Amazons Attack was awful, but even one of his ‘good’ books, Catwoman, has never really grabbed me. So, I’ll try his arc out and see what I think, but I’m not going into it with as much excitement as other people are probably going to be exhibiting….

Yes Amazons Attack was less than quality, but HERO was amazing. Unfortunately, it was one of those books that was too good for regular audiences.
Please do not jump ship, let’s see what happens and if it doesn’t work, then (we hope) Rogers will return.

Flash would be cool, maybe Winick will go off the new Titans book and Rogers can take over. Anything would be cool.

I’m for anything that keeps Blue Beetle alive for the foreseeable future. It’s become one of my favorite DC books, mostly due to Rogers’s inspired scripting.
Let’s hope that Pfeifer can keep the goodwill (no pun intended) going.

Where’s he going next? My guess: Booster Gold or Green Lantern Corp.
Just a guess.

Mr Xrayspex is a good writer. I don’t anticipate any decrease in quality – except possibly in the initial transition period. I’m sticking with it.
Guesses? Hmmm…how’s about renaming Booster Gold: “Blue and Gold”? I’d say, of all things, THAT would be a pretty good match.
There’s nothing else I can think of that would qualify as a “match”…unless he’s talking about the CHARACTER “Match”, the Bizarro clone of Superboy, currently posessed by Jericho. We haven’t seen HIM in a while. Still, I can’t see Rogers being able to work his now familiar sense of humor into such a book. And I doubt that the market would support it, as there really seems to be no call for THAT book.

I have mixed feelings on this. I’m not happy that Rogers is leaving the book, even for a little while. Pfeiffer is a good writer (I’m loving his Catwoman stuff), but Rogers is such a strong writer on Blue Beetle I’m worried no one else can capture the book’s feeling as well.
Still, I’m really happy for Rogers that DC is giving him more assignments. He’s a great writer, and his career deserves a boost. I’d love to see him on Flash after that back-up feature he wrote with Waid. Booster Gold would be a good fit, too, especially since that book seems to be losing both of its writers soon.

Blue Beetle is my favorite comic being published by DC right now, so I’m not pleased by this. That said, I very much like the idea of Rogers taking over Booster Gold or the Flash. Another book I’d love to see him tackle is The All-New Atom, which will almost certainly flounder without Gail Simone.

A match for Blue Beetle?
Maybe a Traci 13 series?

Something that occurred to me today: Are short runs like this a product of current comics culture?
Basically, my logic is as such. Right now, fans tend to follow creators, not titles. Warren Ellis, Brian Michael Bendis, Geoff Johns, et cetera, all have fans that will buy what they write. Marvel and DC, knowing this, actively seek out “hot” creators to work on their A-list titles. Which means that writers and artists have to work at promoting themselves to fans in order to get work. And any given run on a series, while it might win you overall kudos, gets you praise at the beginning and at the end. (With an occasional, “Have we mentioned how good this is every month?” sprinkled in between.)
Which means it’s to the financial advantage of writers and artists to have short runs on series, to get the maximum amount of “buzz” for their projects, which they need to get work. (Example: How much have you heard about Mark Bagley over the last decade? You heard about him when he started Ultimate Spider-Man, you heard a bit about him every so often when people said, “And month in and month out, Bagley turns out consistently stellar work on Ultimate Spider-Man,” and you’re hearing about him now on ‘Trinity’. His public profile nearly dropped off the radar, not because he wasn’t working, but because he was continuing to work on the same thing for a long time.)

Will Pfeiffer is great. His Aquaman and Catwoman runs are some of my favorite.
Seriously, he put out a great Aquaman series.

Its funny that just Monday, I was thinking Rogers should go to Teen Titans. That book is at a low as far as I’m concerned and it needs as much help as possible. Hopefully, Blue Beetle’s book won’t suffer. I’d much rather see it end on a highnote than get cancelled after a horrid arc or two.

I’d love a Rogers Teen Titans.
Good way to pimp the property to Hollywood too!

I’m going to continue picking up Blue Beetle. Pfeiffer’s Aquaman was good, but his HERO run won me over to try just about any book he writes. I wish I’d see more of Kano’s work though. Pfeiffer and Kano was a great combination. What has Kano done recently? Anything?

Way too much. Every single series he’s worked on gets him praise, despite the low quality or his art. I specifically remember the over-hyping he got from Thunderbolts.
