I know this if off topic but I'm looking into starting my own weblog and was curious what all is needed to get set up? I'm assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I'm not very web savvy so I'm not 100% positive. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Fair enough. I'm hoping my local library gets a copy, as I'd like to read it but my budget's too tight to be buying anything on impulse. It sounds kind of pulpy, from the reviews I've read, which is very much up my alley (so to speak).

The Highwaymen just came out in trade, David, so I just read it and recalled the dust-up between ADD and the writer of the comic. That's why I posted about it.

My reactions to this post go like this:

1) Wow. What an odd post. Alan posted that list literally months ago. Why have they decided to go after it now all of sudden?

2) He reads loads of comics, but generally ones he knows he's likely to like, if his usual reviews and writing are anything to go by. So it's not surprising if the worst thing he read is still a lot better than most stuff out there, what with him being I guy with pretty good taste and everything.

3) Wow, this comments section is pissy. Those spandex fans really hate ADD, don't they?

4) Hey, it's Joe Rice. At least one person here can talk a little sense. Maybe that'll raise the tone.

5) Or not.

6) Oh no, swearing invalidates your opinion. I did not know that. Fuck.

7) Wow, ADD's writing really goes over some people's heads, doesn't it? If only he reviewed more x-men comics.

...for the record, ADD is easily my favourite blogger on our chosen art-form, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest that I only agree with his tastes around half the time. Highwaymen sounds like a comic I'd enjoy, but if Alan doesn't like it, I'm glad he feels comfortable saying so. Because he's a critic, you know? That's what I want from a critic, their honest opinions of the stuff they've read. You can't deny that's what you always get with ADD.

Wow...Doane is simply a terrible reviewer. He rants or he raves, but he doesn't seem able to structure a review or discuss the technique and method of comics at all. I'll stick to Paul O'Brien, thanks.

... wait, how can opinions be accurate? They can be a lot of things (ignorant, well-informed, unusual, etc), but they can't be accurate because they aren't factual. They have no truth value, they're just... opinions.

Perhaps this is something that's easy for comics fans to forget.

(As for the ADD list, I find it kind of lame-- you'd think a guy who read so many comics could have an easier time finding actually bad comics. His idea of good comics is just, well, typical.)

It’s so sad when people try to be condescending on a blog post reply.

Are you saying I tried, but wasn't condescending? That doesn't make any sense. I thought I condescended pretty effectively.

And the irony of you using a condescending tone to mock me is not lost on me, but I think you may have missed it.

If you read his review of 'Highwaymen', he comes off as an Ellis fan with an axe to grind. I mean, it sounds like he didn't like the comic, but it sounds like the reason it wound up on that list was more the implications of the book's existence (specific to 'Planetary'), rather than any problem it really had.

He's certainly right about 'Martha Washington Dies', though. It makes 'All Star Batman' look like 'All Star Superman'.

The Highwaymen was one of my favorite reads last year. I found it fun, well-paced, and consistently entertaining, if not terribly original.

But then, there's no accounting for tastes.

Yeah, I know. Those Whedon fans love their stuff no matter what, it seems.

Otherwise a pretty good "best" list. Shortcomings, All Star Superman . . .can't quibble with most of it. (Zombies? Didn't bother but it can't be THAT good.)

Notice he said "Some of" the worst comics. That certainly can't be disputed. All in all, not a bad list . . .though I question Alan's love of Whedon. I disagree completely with Alan's stuff about the direct market, but his opinions on comics are usually pretty accurate.

And the Sinestro stuff is like after a chef keeps giving you plates full of elephant dung, he switches it up with elephant snot. "Hey, that's not so bad!" Yes, it is.

The Marvel Zombies sequels are some of the best comics of the year? Really?

As for his worst list, I can only assume Doane didn't read Lightning Saga. Lucky bastard.

If Alan David Doane thinks The Highwaymen, [...] is one of the worst comics of 2007, then he obviously doesn’t read a lot of comics.

Is he our version of Perez Hilton?

In any case, I would have to agree with Greg. Any Worst of... list that doesn't include Countdown wasn't too well thought out.
