Much Better Than Homages

I dig Leinil Francis Yu's variant cover for Secret Invasion #1, it's (shocking, I know) NOT a cover homage!!

I know there's already been a lot of trash-talking about this cover, but I happen to really like it--yes, even the disco-ball Spidey suit. My favorite part is Sue in the classic F4 costume.

My only question is this: will I actually be able to get my hands on this variant or will it be a "1:15" ratio cover that ends up behind the counter selling for $30+ at the comic book store? Because I'm really getting sick of that crap.

I like the cover, too, Jase.

I like it a lot better than the normal cover, and yeah, it is a bit of a pain in the ass that this cover is going to be more expensive.

i like the cover - but just a question: seriously, what is with phoenix popping up in all the promos for Secret Invasion?

i realize she's a Skrull in disguise, but i think after Jean's last death not even Cyke would drop Emma (like he did Maddie) and run back to her. so unless the Skrulls managed to harness (duplicate) Phoenix's power levels (and really cause a problem), then what's the point of bringing out a character that everyone pretty much agrees serves better in death (the development of Cyke & Emma's relationship is nice, imo)?

I'm kind of digging Yu's Captain America---in the sense that I appreciate artists who don't make his costume look like a chicken suit. Though, the way he's holding the shield is off... Is he about to drop it face down?

What they're stressing is characters that COULD be skrulls.

Odds are Phoenix WON'T be a skrull in the series, they just want that idea thrown out there.

Wolverine kinda looks like he has some Ultimate Warrior face on.

It, um...kind of looks like it's not done yet. I mean, it looks like he did some preliminary sketches of what he wanted the cover to look like, and then someone grabbed them, scanned them, colored them, and sent them off to the printer.

@Jace: "Disco-ball Spidey suit"--well said! And I agree, I can't believe that I like it.

@Brian: I guess I'd be more pleasantly shocked, like you, if this wasn't the second variant cover (=3rd cover).

Is it just me, or do a lot of the characters look like they have overbites?

Maybe Yu's a Skrull? ;-)

Your mum is a skrull.

Whoo.

I'm more impressed that there aren't any freakin' zombies on the cover - but there is still time!!

With Phoenix, plus Hawkeye and Captain America in their traditional costumes, I'm guessing that cover is a picture of the past.

um...there's no concept behind it at all tho. at least the homage had a concept behind it...i'll accept a standard 'look: it's heroes posing!' cover when it's a regular ongoing but an event series should be distinctive by more than just it's banner/font.

So are the characters on the cover all Skrulls who missed a few memos??

We have:

Captain America - Apparantly Steve Rogers from the costume.

Thor - Old Outfit

Phoenix - Currently dead and hadn't worn that outfit in years.

Hawkeye - Currently Ronin.

Vision - Looks more classic than the current Young Avengers version.

Add spidey to the classic costumes list, it's hard to see amid the colouring, but that's a Ditko spider-emblem on his chest.

I've got it. How do you fight the Skrulls, when you don't know which of your "allies" is a Skrull? Go back in time and recruit from before they started infiltrating. Tony goes back to before the Kree/Skrull War and recruits a team. He figures that it worked out so well to fight himself during "The Crossing", that he'll do it again for Secret Invasion.

Oh wait, that's pretty stupid and doesn't explain Phoenix. Never mind.

The Illuminati did it.

Also, Carl, notice that Wolverine's mask has the whiskers on it that appearend on the first version of his costume.

In fact, if take it these are all "classic" versions of these characters, is the implication that these heroes pictured are the REAL heroes returning and the characters we've been reading about are all Skrulls?

So, Jean's been a skrull since her Phoenix days, Thor since whenever he was last seen wearing that costume and so on...

Although that doesn't make a lot of sense.

I give up.

Although I reckon that's not Spider-Man. It's Dazzler. She's taking up the Spider-Man name and decided to pimp her costume a bit, using an old glitterball and a left-over Ronin Boob-Hider 2000 TM.

I'm thinking the old costumes are to differentiate the skrull impersonators from the actual heroes.

Right - it is likely that most (if not ALL) of these heroes are not ACTUALLY Skrulls, but by showing them in past costumes, it is giving us the mystery - "ARE they Skrulls? Did the real Captain America die? Did the real Vision die?," etc.

Yeah. I was kind of surprised to see anybody not getting that right away.
