A Bit Disappointing...

to see that while Marvel was able to fit a full page memorial to the late Steve Gerber in the back of LAST week's Omega the Unknown, DC still hasn't acknowledged his death in their book, including this week's Countdown to Mystery, which included a story written by Gerber, and yet the book contains no notice that Gerber has passed on.

I understand it is a pain to get these things prepared, and I'm sure DC eventually will do something to commemorate Gerber's passing (the way they plan to deal with the last issue of his run sounds extremely classy and well done to me), but it was still a bit disappointing to read this week's Countdown to Mystery and not see his death mentioned at all.

Edited to Add: Terribly sorry, I was way unclear - I just meant that there was no notice in the book Gerber actually wrote for DC. I am sorry if it looked like I was accusing them of completely ignoring his death (and that's totally what it reads like)! My apologies! I'll omit the confusing part - sorry, DC!

I wonder if they'll wait till the issue where multiple writers are doing their own take on the story? Yeah, it'd be a delay, but it would also be a full issue of tribute, right?

Also, a single page in one issue for Gerber at Marvel is a bit minor to me, imo. Remember the 'Ringo tributes in Marvel books just a few months back?

Here's hoping both publishers give him the due he deserves, and soon.

Yeah, like I mentioned, their plans for the final issue sound quite impressive. Still, it's pretty weird to read a comic by someone who passed away before the comic was put to bed, and not have his passing at least noted inside the comic.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean, Brian. There might not have been a reference in the story itself, but all the DC books from a few weeks ago carried a Gerber tribute on their back page (in the DC Nation section).

There was a tribute to Gerber on the DC Nation page (#103)in most of the books I read last week.

Yeah, DiDio's DC Nation essay last week was about Gerber and Countdown to Mystery.

there was also a tribute in the Vertigo books, if that counts.

DC doesn't update the DC Nation columns for late books, and Countdown to Mystery #6 should have been out two weeks ago (the week before the tribute).

Ok. DC's off my shitlist.

I'm not buying any more Marvel books for a long, looooooonnnng while, though.

Off to the side... Locus (a science fiction semi-prozine) had a very nice obituary of Mr. Gerber (complete with photo) in this months issue.

I was *very* surprised at the quickness of its appearance; it had to literally be a last second addition.

There's the link to the Steve Gerber tribute that ran in all of the March 5th DC books... the ones that weren't late, anyway.

DC is also going to be having various writers doing their own ending to his Dr. Fate story, as a tribute.

"Ok. DC’s off my shitlist.

I’m not buying any more Marvel books for a long, looooooonnnng while, though."

Uhhh, but Marvel had a tribute, too.

Sorry, I should have specified - I meant a tribute in a Gerber comic.

Marvel put theirs in Omega the Unknown because it was a Gerber comic, so I expected some notice in a comic Gerber actually wrote.

I did not mean to imply DC ignored his passing completely! And it totally reads like I did! So sorry about that!

Joe, MarkAndrew is still irked at Marvel for their usage of Gerber's creations.

Here is a post of his on the topic.

That's silly.

My loyalty to Steve Gerber's pretty strong.

My loyalty to the Marvel comics corporation is negligible. At best.

And, honestly, I can probably find a better use for my comics dollar by weaning myself off the two Marvel titles I get regularly, anyway.

Most Marvel comics come through the Iowa City library, anyway. So I'll still read and enjoy the ones I like. I just don't feel the need to own any more new Marvel comics. It's not like I don't have thousands of the damn things already.

What's silly is not reading the new Omega . . .that's some very good comics.
