Apparently, that seems to be a likely scenario. Joe Rice sent me the following link, about Universal adapting the comic, with director Edgar (Shaun of the Dead) Wright directing, and Michael Cera in final talks to appear as Scott.
That sounds about as awesome as you can get. Let’s hope it comes to fruition!

Boy, Michael Cera is really typecasting himself as “spindly nerd does good,” isn’t he?
I think we have a successor for when Tobey Maguire gets tired of playing Spider-Man.

Wright and Cera? My God, the universe may explode.

Cera seems too low energy to play Pilgrim based off my impression of the first volume. I mean, to me Scott came off as this over-excited, semi-spastic manchild, and I’ve never seen Cera convincingly branch away from his deadpan, I-just-took-half-a-bottle-of-Quaaludes delivery.
Eh, whatever, it’s not like I’m going to watch this either way. Maybe they can stunt-cast Ellen Page in it too and make a movie even more insufferable than Juno was!

I like Michael Cera. I’m a big fan of Edgar Wright. I love Scott Pilgrim. I’m not sure they make a good mix. It could be a perfect match though.

NOOOOOO!!!! I love Scott Pilgrim. I have a mild to modest dislike for Michael Cera and Edgar Wright. Oh well, hope it works out anyway.

I haven’t read THAT much Scott Pilgrim but I HAVE seen a lot of Arrested Development and Juno, at least and I just don’t see this at all.

Geez, this is horrible news. I got the impression that Scott was supposed to be a good-looking slacker with manchild charm, not an ugly dork with a bland delivery. And anyone who thinks he’d be a good Spider-Man is freakin insane and drinking the Apatow/Arrested Development Kool-Aid a little too much.

There’s no Arrested Development Kool-Aid. Just people who are so trend-obsessed that they would denigrate an expertly-made show just because it’s become popular post-mortem.
And that’s the most hive-minded thinking of all.

Well, everyone should know by now how I feel about ascribing motivations behind views.
I’m against it.

I guess it doesn’t feel like I’m making assumptions because I don’t know what the “drinking the kool-aid” comment could mean, other than “lots of people like this just because they think it’s trendy to like it”.
But if T means something else, he should feel free to correct me.
Brian Cronin

Yeah, I was basically agreeing with you (only keeping my bit strictly to “I don’t like ascribing motivations,” which is what I felt the “Kool-Aid” stuff was).

The real question is who’s playing Steven Stills.

Dude, Cera has pretty much always been a schlub pushing fatty territory, so he’s pretty much completely godawful in terms of casting as Spider-Man.
I don’t agree with T. much, but if you remotely think Cera would make a good Spider-Man (or really any remotely action-oriented role,) you’re chugging some heavy-duty kool-aid.
Brian Cronin

I believe you are thinking of his Superbad co-star, Jonah Hill, Dave.
Dave
March 19, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Jonah Hill is a straight-up fatty, not pushing fatty. I’m not saying Michael Cera is a fatty yet, but based off his build in Arrested Development and Juno, he’s closer to “fatty” than he is to “spindly”.
I say this readily acknowledging that I’m no manorexic myself and that most of my time is spent in the company of people far more body-conscious than I, but it’s starting to rub off on me. And there is no way that you can claim to me that Michael Cera remotely resembles a track team member in Juno, because I did a year on high school track, and by those standards Cera was flat-out obese.
Brian Cronin

I dunno, Cera looks skinny to me.
Dave
March 19, 2008 at 8:24 pm
which proves how fucked my perception is after high school track and two years in the company of hard-core musical theater fans, I guess.
I’m lucky not to have body-image issues at this point.

Yeah, you’ve got a really skewed view. Cera’s obviously a skinny guy.

I’m not bashing Arrested Development or its quality. I’m just saying that no matter how much you like a show and the actors on it, that doesn’t make actors from said show appropriate to play everyone under the sun. I love The Wire to death, for example, but I won’t let my love for said show turn me delusional to the point I think Bunk, my favorite actor, would make a good Luke Cage for example. I think people are letting their love of AD and Apatow and Cena’s characters delude them into thinking he’s remotely like Scott Pilgrim or worse, Spider-Man.

Which guy was he on Arrested Development?

“I think people are letting their love of AD and Apatow and Cena’s characters delude them into thinking he’s remotely like Scott Pilgrim or worse, Spider-Man.”
Or they recognize he’s an actor and probably play different parts then they’ve seen him play before. I don’t think Scott Pilgrim is that far removed from other characters he’s played. He hasn’t played anyone exactly like Scott Pilgrim but he’s shown an ability for comic timing and has a likable presence which is something the character needs.
Off the top of my head I can’t think of anyone to play Scott Pilgrim.

Cera is actually my fave choice for this role! He can bring absurdity and deadpan at the same time.

I dunno, I can see this working. I can totally see the scene where Ramona delivers Scott’s CDs. Yes. Michael Cera doing the whole “I mean…there are…reasons…for you to hang out with me?” thing totally works in my head.

Gary Oldman is an actor and can play different parts, but I don’t think he can play Pilgrim either. Sometimes talent just isn’t enough, and if the guy already looks wrong for the role (way too dweeby, unattractive and nerdy looking), why bank on “probably” can play against his typecasting, which is also incongruent with the Pilgrim role?
So basically, he looks nothing like Scott and can “probably” do a role different than the non-Pilgrimlike character he’s been doing nonstop, therefore I should realize this is good casting?
Topher Grace would be perfect. His 70s show role is a slightly smarter Scott Pilgrim, he can do the perfect amount of social awkwardness required for Scott rather than all out misfit dweeb Cera specializes in, and is about as good-looking as I’d imagine a real-life Scott.

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand how you can be so definite about the “look” of a heavily cartoon-styled character. Any young brunette skinny guy is close enough. It’s not like O’Malley’s art is extremely detailed or specific.
And there are lots of young women that would disagree with you about Cera’s attractiveness.

He did knock up Juno.

It does amuse me that we as straight (as far as I know at least) males are debating the attractiveness of Scott Pilgrim and Michael Cera.
I say Michael Cera is cute enough for a teenage Asian girl to have a crush on.

This is the thought process behind the casting apparently….”Scott Pilgrim has a lot of indie cred. Cera is an actor with a lot of indie cred. If we announce Cera as Scott Pilgrim, the resulting indiegasm will cause knee-jerk celebration and make everyone suspend their critical faculties and ignore how inappropriate Cera is for the role.” Seems to have worked.
And Apocada, Cera is rich and famous, so of course women like him. That means nothing.

Are you quoting yourself, there? Or is that something that anybody actually said? Because it looks like you’re justifying your opinion with your opinion. That’s stupid.
You sound really petty and jealous, T. After all, Gary Oldman is rich and famous and I don’t see any young women swooning over him.
A-P-O-D-A-C-A, please.
T.
March 21, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Oh yeah, I’m sure rich, famous and powerful movie star Gary Oldman cannot get young women swooning over him the way Cera does. Suuuure. What a preposterous thought on my part. Thanks for setting me straight there about my ridiculous notion that fame and power can make women find a man more attractive than he is. I need to stop visiting this little place called reality and get more of my knowledge of how the world works from you apparently.

Perhaps the thought process was, “We need someone who can act. Oh, he can act. He is a young male. OK, there we go.”
Casting for looks is not a good idea.

Calm down, T. You’re taking this WAY too personally.
I was talking about girls finding him attractive. You’re talking about him being able to pick up girls. Very different thing. Girls don’t swoon on the internet about guys they’re only interested in for their money. Who would they be trying to fool?
I know for a fact that there are young girls who find Cera attractive because of his looks. Can you show me somewhere where girls are opining about how dreamy Oldman is?
