More Thoughts on Canadian Comic Prices

You might recall that Don MacPherson did a piece awhile back on how comic companies were adjusting to the fluctuating U.S./Canadian dollar market. Well, he has a follow-up, regarding DC's fairly late reaction to the news. Check it out here.

My shop here in Montreal has always offered pull-list clients their comics at US list prices adjusted for the exchange rate. Monthlies and trade.

Here in Australia, the US and AU dollars are about equal. And yet a standard single issue, say, 100 Bullets #89, out this week, costs $5.50. To put it into perspective, that's two loaves of bread. Down here, it's almost prohibitively expensive NOT to wait for the trade - you almost save 50%.

A couple of places up here in Winnipeg (Manitoba) sell at the US prices.

The one I go to gives me 25% discount so it basically evens out whichever place I go to.

There are multiple stores in the Toronto area where you can get U.S. cover price minus 20%. I mean, it was like that before DC's announcement.

OZ On-Line Comic Shop here,
Keep in Mind Sone that it cost a lot to import the comics to Australia and us Comic Shop owners have to pay the bills somehow after all.

I am studying abroad in New Zealand and although the NZ is about 80 US cents, most comics here are $6. I guess for shipping. Trades aren't much better, with most being $30 intead of $20. I dropped most books til I get back in the States.

Man you have expensive bread in Australia!

Here in England I have to pay £2.20 for The Flash, which is 2-4 loaves of bread depending on which you buy. Still TPBs are mostly £7-8 on Amazon and under a fiver on eBay (if you're patient) so there's still no way I'm going to buy more than one monthly comic.

My LCS in Montréal used to give me US prices minus 10%, but since the early days when the value of the canadian dollar rivaled the USD, he gives me US prices minus 25% on everything.

It's a good time to buy comics.

I've been getting US price with a 25% discount for a year or more now at my shop in Winnipeg. It makes it practically an affordable habit!!

I know I'm buying a few more titles--I'd really love to know if overall Canadian sales have gone up significantly since the prices came down.

I get US price and 25% discount, too. I've noticed that Marvel drops the price first, but DC drops it better.
