I would vote for Locas.The ongoing story of Maggie and Hopey.I feel,was more enjoyable overall for me because of the art.The early Mechanics stories were awesome(Frazetta/Williamson feel) and the characters that I indentified with more.But the Bros. are masters of their craft and you will be richly rewarded by reading either,preferably both.

I think that, overall, 'Beto probably has the strongest total body of work of any American cartoonist.

1. I notice quite a few of these were mentioned on the podcast interview Cronin did a while back. (I know what "S" will be.)

Also to BDaly, Fantagraphics recently put out some cheaper trade collections of the original L&R series. Three collecting the Locas stories from Jaime, three collecting the Palomar stories from Gilbert, and a seventh collection for their miscellanous non-Palomar/Locas stories. They're a cheaper investment if you don't feel like plunking down the $40/50 on the complete collections.

Excellent choice!
Los Bros. Hernandez create wonderful comics. Best comic of all time, IMO. I've yet to see something that compelling in ages.

Bdaly: If you can, get both. If not, I'd stick with Palomar, but it's a damn close call. Locas has more obviously appealing art, but Palomar has a richer, more complex and more engaging story.

I've haven't read anything from the Hernandez bros (nobody's perfect), but I'm planning to shell out on Palomar. Does anyone think I should go for Locas instead?

A solid choice, despite neither of them ever working on Quasar. Nobody's perfect.

Except Quasar. Cosmic origins, a costuem change that became not just a mere plot point but HOW HE SAVED THE FRICKIN' UNIVERSE FROM DESTRUCTION, and a mullet to boot? Where else does one find such a triple threat? Guy Gardiner's got two, at most.

Excellent choice!! It should be noted that Fantagraphics recently did a 7-volume reprint of every story from the original L&R series. So now all of the Palomar and Locas stories are in chronological order (or about as chronological as they'll ever be thanks to how much they jumped around.) Jaime's "Death Of Speedy" story is just about the most perfect comic I've ever read and should be required reading for anybody wanting to learn how to tell a story through sequential art. The last page of that story still sends chills up my spine every time I read it.
