Has there been an explanation given for why everyone was calling J’onn “The Martian” in the latest issue of the Justice League? Is this some really weird retcon?
Was the faux-speech bubble effect for 2 and 3 a casualty of the site redesign or is my browser just being weird?
Because the branding for the character has said “Martian” and the character is known as “Martian” in the minds of non-comic book reading people who can’t possibly comprehend that the actual name of the character is J’onn J’onnz even though the title of the book is different from the character name… so they started calling the character Martian to put it all in line.
(Yeah, I’m still ticked off about the whole calling Captain Marvel ‘Shazam’ thing)…
I don’t know why. But given all the dumb things they’ve done to J’onn over the past two years are we really surprised?
I hope they reveal that J’onn is a Skrull.
You now that’s just the same as the way I call the black guy at work “black guy”.
No he doesn’t seem to like me very much
Sort of on topic: Is anyone else sick of characters constantly referring to each other by their real names?

When they’re facing enemies and/or around people that don’t know the character(s)’s real name, then yes. Other than that, I don’t mind. I don’t expect Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent to be in the same room in their civilian guises and call each other Batman and Superman. That’s ridiculous. When they’re “in character” and alone or with other superheroes that know their IDs and use real names, that’s fine by me.

That’s what I meant. It happens in almost every issue of every comic I see these days.
Maybe it’s because “Martian Manhunter” is no longer politically correct and “Martian Personfinder” doesn’t have the same ring to it.
Couldn’t it just be short for Martian Manhunter? That *is* quite a mouthful.
Does anybody actually call him the Martian Manhunter? Anybody know what they call him on the news in the DCU?
Friends of his should call him “J’onny boy”, “MMM, MMM, GOOD”, or “Hey there, Oreo breath.”

No. It would seem weird to me if they didn’t
