I would not have guessed Boo-see-ma.

Now I gotta train myself to stop saying Byoo-seh-ma.

That’s pretty much how I’ve always pronounced it, either Boo-see-mah or Byoo-see-mah.

And I think it’s either sing-keh-vitch, sing-kah-vitch, or sing-kiv-itch.

Surely “Blue” without the “L” is pronounced “Boo”

Am I missing something here?

And I’ve always said sin-kÉ™-vitch (where É™ is that really short vowel sound that can be just about any vowel ).

To quickly jump on another, I believe Moench is pronounced Mench.

I only just spotted the other day that Andy Hefler is actually called Andy Helfer and I’ve been getting his name wrong for years.

What about Snejbjerg? I tend to say snay-byurg but I’m sure that’s wrong.

I pronounce it “Snay-byurg”.

I had to ask Kurt Busiek himself how to pronounce his name once (BYOO-sik).

Over the years, I’ve heard people pronounce it Boo-see-ma, and I always wanted to correct them (but didn’t because that would be rude – and I truly WASN’T SURE if I was pronouncing it right). But, by dang, I would have bet money that it wasn’t Boo-see-ma.
I have been wrong.

I owe the Buscema’s about 20-year’s worth of apologies.

i always pronounced it BUSH-ema until Steve Buscemi became popular and i extrapolated off of his name to get Boo-SHEH-mah.

How do we know Buscema was not being polite? Tom DeFalco is Buscema’s boss. Pretty senior from what I recall, but a lot younger than Buscema? And Buscema is freelance isn’t he? If my boss phoned me with an offer of work and pronounced my name wrong I wouldn’t correct him.

Dang! I’ve always thought it was boo-she-ma and sign-ke-witz. How about Geoge Perez? Is it Pay-rez? Sorry if my OKlahOMa accent is showing!

And how about Romita? Is it “Row-mit-ah” or “Row-meet-ah”?

I also say snay-burg for Snejbjerg, though I’ve never noticed the second j. I’ve always pronounced Busiek as Byoo-sik. I think Djurdjevic (again, I’ve never noticed the second j) must be Jerd(like nerd with a j as in Japan)-Yevitch

I’ve always pronounced Busiek as Boo-see-eck.

And I too changed the way I pronounced Buscema’s name after Steve Buscemi became popular. Boo-seh-ma is a bit of a surprise.

I read here on CSBG somewhere that Djurdjevic is “YERD-ya-vik”.

In a recent interview I saw for a BBC show on Ditko, Stan Lee pronounced Romita “ruh-MEE-tah”

Somewhere a long time ago, I was told Sienkiewiecz is “sin-KEV-itch”.

George Perez is PEAR-ez, with the accent on the first syllable.

I always pronounce Djurdjevic either as it is or with silent D’s.

Busiek I pronounce bue-zeek.

I’ve heard John Romita pronounce it as byoo-seh-ma…

Incidentally, I’m sure a really old issue of Marvel Age had a whole article on how to pronounce the names of varoius Marvel personnel. I’ll try to dig it out if I stil lhave the issue, but to be truthful I’m not that confident that I kept too many issues of Marvel Age….. (sadly)

Byoo-SEH-muh – that’s how Stan Lee pronounced it right in front of John in the video “How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way”.

are you sure? I’m Italian, and I’m pretty sure that it should be pronunced Boo-she-ma.

Oddly enough, I have a FULL RUN of Marvel Age (intentionally, would ya believe it? actually, I have full runs of most Marvel “solicitation”-type magazines over their history…never know what you’ll need for research)…

ANYWAY… if you DON’T have the issue, and if you have a rough idea WHICH issue (or within a certain “give-or-take” of issues), I’ll go thru my copies.

Because that’s just stupid?
Anyone who is so nervous about getting a job that they wouldn’t correct their name, doesn’t deserve the job, and as that’s not the case with Buscema, I think we can assume Defalco’s telling the truth.

Man, I am constantly astounded at the weird pronunciations people come up with for names.

Back in the early days of the original NOVA comic, there was an issue where Nova visited the offices of Marvel Comics and actually met the guys who were doing the Nova comic. How to pronounce Buscema was one of the things that came up in that scene.

I haven’t read it since back in those days, but it would be in the ESSENTIAL NOVA.

Also, I gotta say, with a name like ‘Donaghe’ and growing up like I did right next to the Mexican border, pronouncing names right has always been important to me.

I’ll bet I even say George Perez’s name with more of an accent than he does (giving the ‘r’ in Perez that kind of soft ‘d’ sound).

After embarassing myself with BUSK-em-a before my highly knowledgable LCS owner, he pronounced it boo-SHE-ma. This is what I get for never actually talking to anyone (as opposed to writing) about comics…

Two of my favorite all-time pencillers are Chris Bachalo and Travis Charest, but I never knew how to pronounce either’s until I happened to see Richard Friend at a con (who’s inked both of them) and he filled me in:

That’s exactly how I pronounce Bachalo. The Charest prounounce is new to me. I always thought it’s Che-rest.

I went to high school with Sal’s nephew (John’s son) Mike, and it is indeed Bue-see-ma … maybe he’s Sal’s son and John’s nephew, I cant remember now, it was a long time ago …

Because, as Apodaca pointed out, people with unusual names are used to having them pronounced wrong. it’s no big deal. My name’s Tolworthy, but most people add an ‘s’ after the l, or they miss the ‘y.’ Yesterday I was helping my daughter polish a trophy she’d won at school. Her name was engraved on it. Spelled wrongly as usual. She wins a lot of stuff. And when you correct people they still get it wrong the next time. They don’t mean anything by it, and I’m fine with that. Maybe Buscema feels the same. Tomarto… tomayto… it’s all good.

If his nephew said it was Bue-see-ma then I guess that’s conclusive.

Bill Sienkiewiecz used to pronounce his name “Sink-o-wits”. One day he was talking with Tom Orzechowski about their shared Polish heritage, and Tom taught him the Polish pronunciation of his name. He loved it, and has called himself ‘sin-Kay-vitch’ ever since.
