For the most part, seems like a solid job. Obviously, I can quibble here and there, but the nominations are fairly understandable.
And then there’s nominating Justice League of America #11 as one of the Best Single Issues/One-Shots of the year?
With all due respect to the judging panel of John Davis, Paul DiFilippo, Atom! Freeman, Jeff Jensen and Eva Volin, what could you folks possibly be thinking?
I can’t believe that you actually reached the consensus that, of the hundreds of single issues/one-shots released within the time frame of the Eisners, that JLA #11 was one of the five best, so what else could it be? Is there some pressure to include something from the Big Two? I notice Marvel had an issue, too (a Sensational Spider-Man Annual that was actually quite good, although I doubt I’d count it as one of the five best single issues of the year, either), so is that it? Even then, though, The Spirit, one of your nominees for Best Continuing Series, had a number of one-shot issues - why not an issue of The Spirit?
It just puzzles me greatly. I can understand differing tastes, but I cannot understand taking a position that JLA #11 was one of the five best single issues/one-shots of the year.

I would say that JLA #11 was better than the issues of The Spirit that I bought and read. I loved Cooke’s Spirit, but I remember after reading JLA #11 feeling the need to tell everyone I knew that read comics that they needed to read this issue.

There are a few “Really?????” ones in there
Best series - Buffy Season 8? (personally I can’t see it for Y the Last Man either)
Best New Series - Immortal Iron Fist?
Best Penciler/Inker team - Pia Guerra/Jose Marzan, Jr?? Ethan Van Sciver???

Captain America has best writer and best artist nominees, but it’s not considered one of the best comics? How odd.
I read JLA#11. It’s back there in a long box somewhere. I honestly have no memory of it whatsoever.
Glad to see The Boys get some love.

Was #11 the book with Roy and Mari trapped in the rubble? A genuinely uplifting issue where the heroes are HEROES, and show courage and fortitude that has little to do with their power? Certainly an issue worth honoring compared to much of the high-stakes posturing that dominated the Big Two.
We need more one and dones.

It’s hard to argue with Ha.
It’s easy to argue with Meltzer.
Beats me.

Crecy got cheated. 10-20 years from now this book will still be in print while half of the Eisner winners from this year will be forgotten.
The Goon: Chinatown gets a nod for the painting category but wasn’t good enough for the Graphic Novel category? I know Powell is pretty heavily stacked on nom’s but that WAS the best thing he did last year, period.

I think Y the Last Man deserves its nominations. Especially considering this is the last year it will be able to receive them, I think.
Fables has been constantly nominated for the past few years in most of the major awards, but it’s noticeably absent this year.
Buffy being nominated as both Best Ongoing and Best New is a bit odd. It should be one or the other. I don’t think it’s good enough to be in BOTH categories.

JLoA #11 was the best isue of Meltzer’s run (actually, his only good issue), but I don’t see it as one of the best of last year. Sensational Spider-Man Annual #1 is more fitting in this category, but it does look like they’re trying to somehow fit into the awards books from the Big Two. That’s not really a bad thing, but I’m sure they could’ve found a better issue than JLoA.
Speaking of odd choices, what about Exit Wounds? It got a nominee for Best New Graphic Album and Rutu Modan for Best Writer/Artist, but why not a Best U.S. Edition of International Material?

No matter how many years go by where I figure I’ve already read a decent chunk of NEW stuff, the Eisners always come along and prove to me that I don’t know crap. That’s only half-sarcastic, by the way, but I’m still astounded at some of the great stuff that gets ignored. If you’re going to go with “mainstream” superhero stuff, there’s no love whatsoever for Stuart Immonen’s work?

Oh, and Jim Lee gets a nomination for covers on All Star Batman and Robin, but All Star Superman gets no love at all? That’s criminal.

If The Nightly News does not win best limited series I’ll be pretty bummed.

Yeah I would have picked on Jim Lee. He’s certainly not worthy, but it’s not such a surprise to see him on the list.

It must have something to do with what DC submitted for nomination. For reasons passing all understanding, they must have submitted that issue and not any of The Spirit. That’s the only explanation I can think of.

I remember when JLA #11 came out everyone was making a big deal how good it was. I thought it was average at best. Maybe Meltzer’s best issue, but that’s not saying much. Any of Dini’s done in one Detective issues would have been better, or as mentioned any issue of The Spirit.

Jensen writes for Entertainment Weekly and seems to have an orgasm about Big Company Properties fairly regularly. I seem to remember them highlighting the hardcover a few weeks back. He also wrote Team Titans back in the day. Interpret that as you will.
The Justice League nomination just had to be a gimme to EW. That’s the only excuse I can come up with.

No love for Morrison and Quitely?
Also how come Monster by Naoki Urasawa gets nominated for Best Continuing Series? I mean isn’t it a reprint material?? I do love Urasawa btw.

Maybe they stood around a table covered in photos of all the nominees and debated for three months over who should be picked, and why. Oh, and they insisted on referring to everyone by their first names, preferably using a different colored font for their speech bubbles.

Oh yeah, when #11 came out, it was pretty clearly the best issue of the run to that point. I think I even did a blog entry about it, about how it was the best issue of his run so far - but “best issue of Brad Meltzer’s otherwise poor run on Justice League of America” is not so good.

Debating what the best Meltzer issue of JLA was is like trying to pick the best smelling turd in a bathroom. No matter what the winner is, it’s still gonna stink. I don’t think it’s pressure to include the big 2, I thnk maybe they just have a hack quota to fill. Last year Loeb was nominated for something, so this year they used Meltzer as their token hack.

As long as Jason Aaron wins Best New Series for Scalped I’ll be pleased with this year’s Eisners on the whole!

People were talking about how good Meltzer’s JLA #11 was? Were you people on a different internet? The issue was slammed at the time for wasting Ha given the story in that issue, and how little it gave him to do. That the story was trite and cliche was another matter all together.
All Star Superman #6, which came out in the first week of 2007, was miles better and might actually be the greatest Superman story ever told. I’m shocked it wasn’t nomanited, but then most of the nominees I have read ranged from middling (Buffy, Fraction’s Spidey Annual) to awful (JLA #11, the last year’s worth of Y).

JLA 11 deserves the nomination. The rest of the JLA book deserves to be forgotten. Maybe it is the stench of the other issues that are souring you on this one.
And someone is questioning Iron Fist as a nominee for best new series? Not only should it be nominated, it should win.

I’m just pretty depressed that Nightly News is almost certainly going to lose to Umbrella Academy. The Boys getting nominated is pretty unexpected and amazing to me, but in light of the most recent arc, I’d have to agree with that nom. It’s really turning into something much better than what the first arc would’ve led most people to believe. I’m a huge fan of Monster too, but I’m guessing both of them will lose to Y.
The Karasik story nominated for best short was really powerful, so I’m definitely pulling for that and I Shall Destroy All Civilized Planets as well.
