Too Close for Comfort?

Don MacPherson has an interesting piece up about one of the covers comic legend Jim Steranko is doing for Radical Publishing’s new Hercules series.

Check it out!

After reading the articke, I don’t see any real issue with the homage. Homages and swipes of the classic covers are almost a standard practice at this point. Though infrequent, one companys cover has been redone by another (EG: DC doing a Marvel cover). Add to that the fact that Steranko is homaging/swiping his own work and there’s even less to gripe aobut.

Worst case scenario: Adams influenced Steranko. What’s the realdifference between being influenced by something that just happened rather than something that happened 30 years ago? The only difference is that the influence is still fresh in our minds.

I say: No harm, no foul, and no precidence for Marvel OR Adams to gripe.

It looks to just be a coincidence.

In the end, I sort of like seeing them side by side since they’re two of my favorite artists doing the same sort of take on an old cover.

I’m kind of weirded out that the first reaction by everyone is to think the creators did something dishonest. Art Adams cover celebrates a classic cover done by Steranko. Steranko revists a cover that he is well know for. Adams cover plays with the situation enough to be its own special work.

This is a big to do about nothing.

The old cover being a Steranko cover to begin with of course.

The only “problem” it could cause is people confused by the books.

Who’s accusing anyone of doing something dishonest? I pointed out a problem could arise, that’s all.

This (potential) brouhaha is worth it for MacPherson’s “EVERYBODY HERCS” post title alone! Well done, Don.

Thanks, GarBut. Coming up with post titles is one of my favorite things about the blog.

It looks like a predictable coincidence resulting from one company having Steranko do covers for a Hercules comic, and Marvel replacing the Hulk with Hercules in Hulk’s comic. In either case, it would be natural to think of doing an homage of the old Hulk cover.

It’s just weird that they synced up in time like this, not unlike Swamp Thing/Man-Thing. I mean, last year if you were planning a Hercules comic, you probably wouldn’t think it likely that Hercules would get such prominent play at Marvel this year.

It seems like the biggest shame here is that they landed Steranko to do some new comics work, and he’s just referencing his own classic cover rather than coming up with something new and kickass.

What this thread needs is a link to the original Steranko cover:

Also, Kaare Andrews homaged Steranko’s cover at the start of the Bruce Jones run in Incredible Hulk #34:

(Remember Bruce Jones’s run? Too bad Marvel doesn’t.)
