Snark Free Corner for 5/12

Welcome to the latest installment of your breath of snark free air!

In honor of the finale of the Valiant Comic Book Alphabet of Cool this week, this is an All-Valiant edition!

Enjoy!

SNARK FREE DEBATE

Which Turok was the best?

The original Gold Key stories featuring Turok had the great Gaylord Du Bois and Paul S. Newman writing the stories (particularly Newman), but they were fairly straightforward tales.

The early Valiant issues had a nice twist, while keeping the whole “hunting dinosaurs” bit, it also had various other weird anomalies in the Lost Land. However, while the series did feature Tim Truman for awhile and a young Rags Morales, otherwise, it did not have creators at the same level as a Newman.

The final Valiant series was created by Fabian Nicieza, and it remakes Turok as a modern-day Native American who gets caught up in his destiny to be the next dinosaur hunter. It was a fun story, and it spawned a very popular video game.

So which series was the best?

Let me know – and remember, in the debate, no snarkiness allowed!!

COVER THEME GAME

As always, here is the game. I show three covers. They all have something in common, whether it be a character, a trait all three characters share, locale, creator, SOMEthing. And it isn’t something obvious like “They all have prices!” “They all have logos!” “They all feature a man!” etc.

In addition, please note that you must have some familiarity with comic book history to correctly guess these comics. You cannot guess the connective theme just by looking at the covers solely, you must have some knowledge beyond just the covers.

A cool point to the first person to figure it out!

Good luck!

SNARK FREE CHALLENGE

You have to make a new Valiant Universe of eight titles – which eight books do you choose, and which continuity do you use for each one?

This week’s game is as follows…

Find me a cover featuring a cover homage to a previous VALIANT cover on a Valiant comic book…

Here is an example (which you can’t use!)…

(This cover homages the cover of Harbinger #1)

Remember, only one cover per commenter!

The only Turok I’ve read is the third one, so I’m going to have to go with that. No snark whatsoever, either. I thought Barry and Josh played off each other rather well, and loved the notion that eventually college baseball hero Josh would at some point lose an arm in battle.

A line of eight Valiant titles? Let’s see–
1. Turok. The Josh Fireseed version.
2. Solar. Phil Seleski.
3. Magnus, Robot Fighter. I’d actually go all the way back to the Gold Key days
4. Harbinger. The original.
5. Troublemakers. G&G would be set up as an explicitly anti-Harada force, but the kids don’t know that.
6. X-O Manowar. Aric.
7. Secret Weapons, which I would kind of cheat and use as an anthology for everything that didn’t make the list–most especially the rest of Concrete Jungle.
8. Quantum and Woody.

The fact that all three covers have somebody wearing Spider-Alien armor is too obvious, but it did make me think of a “Valiant on Valiant” cover homage (homaging X-O #5)…

The Truman/Morales/Gulacy run on Turok is one of my favorite comics ever.

The fact that all three covers have somebody wearing Spider-Alien armor is too obvious

Right, but perhaps a twist on that?

Line of eight Valiant titles:

1.) Eternal Warriors. The Acclaim concept of putting Archer, Armstrong, Ivar and Galad all in one book – but using the Shooter continuity, which was much cooler.
2.) Magnus, Shooter era. Gotta have Magnus.
3.) Ninjak, the Kurt Busiek version – absolutely insane concept plus positioning to make him the VU’s equivalent of Spider-Man = must have.
4.) X-O Manowar. Aric. Highest concept ever.
5.) Solar. Phil.
6.) Harbinger, Shooter era.
7.) Quantum and Woody. Obviously.
8.) I’m torn between Shadowman (Jack Boniface) and Turok (any).

The “Who Is It” has to be somebody on the Armorines, right? I haven’t read those books since they first came out, but that’s the only Valiant “team of armored people” I can think of.

Cover game: Rai Companion http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=53060&zoom=4 was an homage of Rai #0 http://www.comics.org/coverview.lasso?id=51978&zoom=4.

Unless it was the other way round.

For Who Is It, is it the Guardsman (O’Brien)? Question #4 makes me think of him…
