Only my #9 & 10 picks didn’t make the extended list (my #7 also missed the top 10).

I’m not surprised they missed though–but I do wonder if anyone else included them.

Although I’m impressed and intrigued by many of the runs on both lists, my favorite will probably always be J.M. DeMatteis and Shawn McManus’ DOCTOR FATE.

I still remember reading issue #2 in my grandmother’s easy chair. The Lords of Chaos have challenged Doctor Fate to a fight, and they’ve transformed one of his friends into their champion. Doctor Fate’s mentor, Nabu, is goading them on. We’re led to expect a huge, knock-down, drag-out battle…

…and then Doctor Fate just walks away. “Why should I fight?” he/she asks. “What’s the point? There’s nothing to be gained if I win.”

The idea that a super-hero could prove themselves superior by walking away from a fight blew my 14-year-old mind…as did just about every issue of DOCTOR FATE that followed. Every issue defied my expectations and made me re-think the assumptions behind them. What other comic book has shown its main character transforming from male to female, dying, taking on issues of religion and spirituality… and still included several laugh-out-loud funny moments every month?

I was crushed when the series ended, and have re-read it several times since then â€” it’s also the one super-hero comic series I’ve had no qualms about giving to people who say they don’t read DC Comics, or comics in general.

I’ll be first in line the day they publish a trade.

I was hoping that my #1 would hit somewhere, but am really not surprised that it didn’t get 50 points. It was the most popular title (AFAIK) of an unpopular line. And, it was a very unpopular line.

I don’t totally remember what I voted for, but I’m 99% certain I’m one of those lucky fans whose top picks were in the top 100. (That said, I am wondering if I had the Stern/Lyle Starman in there– though if I did it wasn’t number 1) I’m going to be curious to see what out-of-the-box choices people came up with since I was pretty much in the box the whole time!

Brian,

I swear I started working on that write up for my #1 Starman, but once I hit paragraph seven I decided I couldn’t do it without making a massive sprawling thesis and I gave up in frustration.

If we do a “Write up a post about something that didn’t even get fifty votes” then I’d give it another go for PAD’s Supergirl or Rucka’s Wonder Woman or Ostrander’s Martian Manhunter or Thieves and Kings (anything to get more people reading it) or Stern on Superman.

Man, I like a lot of DC runs, which is weird because I grew up a Marvel fan. Granted, I grew up a Marvel fan between 89 and 95 before reading DC and I read most of those runs as a whole.
