Neat-o! Brian Hibbs’ “Tilting at Windmills” is a great column, and CBR is lucky to have him. Check out his first column where he discusses the news of Fantagraphics making Diamond its exclusive distributor (joining Marvel, DC, Image and Dark Horse).
Interesting stuff.

What the heck’s going on with Newsarama? First that idiotic question asked of Paul Cornell (and the ‘these aren’t the droids you’re looking for, move along’ tactics used to obliterate even the memory of it), convention coverage where ‘quality control’ has not been an understood concept and now they’ve lost Brian Hibbs, who wrote one of my favourite features there (even when the economics fly over my head!)
Ah well, this is definitely CBR’s gain in this case.

yes, newsarama used to be such a sterling example of journalism

Yeah — it’s not called Newsreleasearma for no reason …

People who can type call it NewsreleasearAma, even.

And I get that. But they used to have at least good coverage of con panels, regular features like Hibbs’ column and I trusted them to actually, y’know, read the log of e-mailed softball questionnaire they call an interview to see if the interviewer might have said something that might be construed as offensive to the interviewee and audience.
The loss of Hibbs’ column, for me, is a sobering portent because I thought he brought the point of view of the retailers and provided a necessary critical voice that stirred up the mix of puff pieces and provided some actual analysis. It’s CBR’s gain, but CBR has great analysis already.

Come on, what big comic website ISN’T filled with press releases?
So you really can’t single Newsarama out for that.

True. But I do fault them for so rarely going beyond what’s in the press release … for serving, as it were, to adjuncts to the PR people.

Newsarama has new ownership now. There are bound to be a few glitches as they absorb the new paradigm.

True… BUT, you’ve got to blind not to notice the drop in quality over at newsarama.
I’ve always preferred CBR, but they used to have stuff that no one else did… and now they don’t (except for the racist interviewer).
They also used to be a little better at hiding the press release nature of their site.
