So Greg, I’m curious. I know it’s been a long while since this review, so it’s quite possible that you don’t remember well enough to answer, but… what do you make of the tangent that follows the three shadows into their excursion against the Baron and the ruse connected to it? Was it simply to humanize death while providing a Joaquim a way to finally protect his father? Or something more?

I picked up Nixon’s Pals on FCBD since my LCS had just hooked me up with lots of free books and I felt like being generous and taking a book off their hands. I want to love Casey in whatever he does (Wildcats 2.0 & 3.0), but unfortunately that isn’t always the case (Rock Bottom). I’m happy to report that Nixon’s Pals was a great and enjoyable read. I kept thinking how much I’d like to read more about many of the characters as I worked my way through the book. I was disappointed that it came to an end. Hopefully Casey has an opportunity to return to what he started here.

No one talks about Casey in hushed tones because his work is usually predictable and filled with lifeless dialogue.

I was pointing out that writers who are spoken of as perfect have plenty of flaws, as well, even if I like them.

That makes me wonder though… is Morrison’s dialog not being naturalistic- or for that matter Ellis reusing certain character types- really a flaw? Bearing in mind that both writers are almost certainly aware of these aspects of their writing, and are probably even doing it on purpose?

there’s a difference between bad writing and writing we don’t like, you know?

(I’ve never read anything by Joe Casey, by the way, so please don’t think I’m commenting on his work. I was just having a conversation on a messageboard about comics reviewing, and this comments thread kind of coincides with some parts of that discussion, so I couldn’t help but join the chatter…)

I obviously disagree with Dan about Casey’s talents, but he’s made up his mind, so nothing I can say will change it. I just wanted to have some fun. I’m not a huge fan of the GOAC’s last year-or-so of work, but, dialog-wise, he’s improved 1000% from his Doom Patrol days.

I need to remember THREE SHADOWS for when I get to the shop. Looks really cool.

Casey is one of those guys whose works always sound good and who gives great interviews, but I always find something lacking in his stories. But I’m still picking up Charlatan Ball. Fear not, Joe!

When mentioning Casey you pointed out how good his creator owned stuff is, but failed to mention his criminally underrated X-Men run. He wrote Uncanny in between Eve of Destruction and Austen, and did a fantastic job with Morrison’s world.
