Tomer, that Buffy thing you mentioned was probably a callback to Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend, specifically the scene where Neville finds that the cross is ineffective against his Jewish neighbor Ben Cortman.

At this point Bill S. had done a year run on Fantastic Four inked by Joe Sinnott, 30 issues of Moon Knight alternately inked by himself and Klaus Janson, and had done some fill ins and covers here and there. He was still in Neal Adams mode, and was still a few months away from his breakthrough work in New Mutants.

Two notable bits? What about Cyclops’ discovery that, when you’re fighting vampires, judo is better than optic blasts.

Tomer, Vamp!Willow was repelled with a cross (and a bottle of Holy Water). Joss Whedon has stated that the usefulness of crosses in his world has nothing whatsoever to do with faith. Despite being either Jewish or Hollywood Wiccan, Willow herself was able to use crosses on several occasions. And most vampires probably aren’t too religious.

I recall that on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Vampire Willow (from an alternate reality) wasn’t affected by a cross because as a human she was Jewish. Don’t remember it was ever implied on other vampire stories, but I’m not really a follower of these.

I’ve never read these X-Men stories, nor the Stephen King story–but I heard the faith/religious symbol thing longer ago than what else was mentioned here–I’m not sure how far back it goes—but most likely it long predates Stephen King

Brain Mac – The reference to having to have faith in the symbol or it wouldn’t work was certainly older than this, being featured in Salems Lot by Stephen King about 8 years before this (I couldn’t say if THAT was the first time the issue was raised)
