More About Comic Critics
- by Brian Cronin
- in General
At the blog for the comic, they updated with some descriptions of the cast of the series...
Cast
Josh Sands: One of the founders of comiccritics.com, Josh is a diehard super hero fan clinging to the fading vestiges of that once mighty genre. He's 23, with a bachelor's degree in Communications that is only slightly less useless than the envelope it still resides in. Just to complete the sad cliché that is his life, Josh works in a small neighborhood comic shop.
Marissa Goldman: Another one of the site's founders, Marissa's interests lean towards independent comics, though she also enjoys poetry and classic literature. She's 25 and works at a Booktopia, a trendy new book store/coffee house franchise that she hates. Marissa is also pursuing an undergraduate degree in American Lit.
Jamal: Little is known about the Comic Critics web designer. And what is known is...unsettling. He's quite technologically adept, and prone to fits of maniacal rage and paranoia. His arch-enemies include balloons and cats.
So far, sounds good to me!

Corned beef? With swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and Russian dressing on rye?
Oh, sorry...thought this was the line for ordering.

So are they actually going to be reviewing books and basing gags on that, or is it just a poke at comic book reviewers?

A little bit of both, Funky.

The strip will be about the reviewers, so while you'll see them actually review comics, the strip will be more about the reviewers.
Sorta like how you'd see Frasier actually take calls, but the show was about Frasier.
I say all this not having seen any of the finished strips, but that is at least what I've been told the strip will be.
And the roughs I have seen look like that.

And I see Brandon has addressed it more succinctly!

I love the Frasier explanation! If we ever put out a book, I actually want that on the dust jacket.

My original idea for the comic was just a comic that reviews other comics. But I thought that would be somewhat boring. When Sean came onto the project, he suggested a more story based idea of it being about the critics as well as them doing reviews of comics.

But will you be reviewing based on your own opinions of the book, or what the characters would think of the book?
And if the latter, how can you be sure their opinions won't start to overtake your own when reading a book, risking the fact that you may end up permanently blurring the line between the character and yourself?
Have you even considered the risk?
Have you???

Funky's starting to freak me out, Brandon. I mean, who gave us the right to play God?!
I went to a community college, for cryin' out loud!
