This is probably my single favorite FF issue, but I read it first reprinted with #44 in an old Marvel Greatest Comics double-sized issue. What a read that was! And it ended on such a stunning cliff-hanger with Black Bolt's first appearance.
It was two or three years later when Vancouver got a comics store, and I bought #46 on my first visit there, hyper-ventilating slightly as I carried it to the counter.

As big a Fantastic Four fan as I am (and I do really love the cover), the story always smacked of a long set-up with a pay-off that kind of was eclipsed by the arrival of Silver Surfer and Galactus in 48.

Maybe it was sour grapes, to some degree, as back in the day 48-50 cost me a good chunk of allowance in the back issue market and I really wasn't that impressed with them (not being all that cosmical-minded).

Now, FF 51 on the other hand... that masterpiece should definitely be on the 51-100 list!

heh.

Wasn't talking about the Avengers leadership in ANY light. Supportive or not.
Just stating that he was brought back into the M.U. proper before that Quasar issue the other poster was mentioning.

Good or bad, a characters history is his history and I can still like the character even though he was mind-controlled (yeah, like that's NEVER happened with any other character before).

Wait, who else led the Avengers while there was some weird mystical mind-f#@%ing going on that led to the teams demise... oh yeah, Captain America.

Sometimes leadership has nothing to do with it, if outside influences are screwing up the works.

Supporting Dr. Druid by talking about his Avengers chairmanship wouldn't be the first thing I would do. Dupe of Nebula, breaking the confidence of Captain Marvel, manipulating away most of the team, and a leadership that ultimately lead to complete disbandment. That is unrivaled poor Avenger leadership.

Druid got his hair back in issue # 37 of AVENGERS SPOTLIGHT (aka: SOLO AVENGERS), when he cast a time-related spell, and it made him younger.

That the Spotlight issue came 3 years before the Quasar issue, and he had been around the M.U. before that anyway, having many guest-appearances since his original (pre-F.F.) "Amazing Adventures" issues (and the later, 1970's re-telling of those issues in "Weird Wonder Tales").

He was an Avenger well before the Shock Troop issues as well and was team leader in the late 1980's.

Just thought I'd help out with some info.

I liked Druid.
He got shafted, creatively speaking.
For the very FIRST Silver Age Marvel hero (predating FF # 1 by 6 months), he deserved better treatment.

Quasar #45: Mark Gruenwald brings back Doctor Druid all the way from the 1950s, settign him up with a magical superteam called the Shock Troop. But did he have to retcon hair on Doctor Druid? The previous, fringed Dr. Druid was one of the few actually bald (not bald-by-choice) charatcers in all of comics! Let his hairline go!
