This might be more appropriate for CBUR, but I once heard Disney sued (or was planning to sue) Carl Barks over copyright infringement when he painted these but wasn't in the employ of the company anymore. It always struck me as odd, not legally (nor did it surprise me from a company like Disney), but because many of these paintings have been printed as posters in the Donald Duck weekly magazine over here in The Netherlands.
