Steve and Mark,

Glad to see you're amusing yourselves.

Problem being, your own amusement has exactly zero to do with the point of releasing a promo piece in the first place.

Then again, per-issue sales on Amazing Spider-Man are the lowest they've been in years, and the sales drop shows no signs of slowing, so obviously, your own amusement takes precedence over your audience.

You do realize that the status quo you're trying to foist on this character will go down in history as being an even worse disaster than the Clone Saga, yes?

It’s not a “real” promo; just something Marcos sent in that made us laugh.

Best idea then is not to release a promo piece that isn't representative of the story, because not knowing it's an 'in-joke', people are going to pre-judge based on that image - which is why promo image's are released, for the audience to pre-judge whether or not it's something they want to spend their money on.

It made ME laugh.

The fallout snark, not so much.

You should release the real promo art so we can decide you've ruined the character based on what it is you're actually doing with him!

Hey there! Obviously the story pre-sucks, is a slap-in-the-face, etc, so i won't try to pursuade anybody otherwise.

However for what it's worth, the text treatment of making Waid look like one of the horrible things Spidey has to face was on purpose because Marcos is flat-out mean and I like making fun of Waid. It's not a "real" promo; just something Marcos sent in that made us laugh.

And the story is not in any way an homage to the Spidey-lifting-the-machinery. We do that in the the Marvel Apes preview in Amazing Spider-Man Family #1 next month!

Okay, gotta get back to ruining comics! Great blog!

If I were a jerk I'd say this promo just had a list of unpleasant things I don't want to necessarily see very often in my superhero comics.

Is that a real promo? It looks like it's fan made. Is it just a distorted / shrunk down version or something? The fonts look terrible, like someone took 2 seconds in Photoshop or MS Paint to tack them on there.

While I'm more than willing to give Marvel money for a Waid penned Spidey comic, they took what could have been an excellent promo and ruined it with poorly handled text. The fact they have Waid's name so it appears to be one of the negative words that Spidey must overcome is just case in point.

i really like Mark Waid and so, if i read/bought any Marvel comics anymore, i might pick this up. However, i haven't bought a Marvel comic book in about five years [if that] and i see no reason to start now. Some of my favorite stories to this day are the Waid 'Flash' & 'Cap' titles. Other stuff is at least well written and has a point to it.

It's a really well drawn cover, and I think Waid/Martin is a good match.

Doesn't mean that it is not funny to see Spidey lifting heavy machinery again.

How many times has Spider-Man been trapped under machinery, anyway? You know that you have a serious problem when the same scene gets continually homaged (ripped off?) over and over again across a four decade long history.

You know, that would be a great idea for a "Top 5." "Top 5 over-homaged comic scenes." The machinery would definitely be up there.

Bian Mac, I got your back: Totally in agreement about Waid and the snark block, I'm all for seeing what he can do in a (hopefully) self-contained 2-parter, outright homage or not.

I only snarked "Meltzer" because, well, that triumvirate is his M.O., right down to what I believe was an Eisner-winning standalone JLA issue.
