Unfortunately,those who like CMX seem to be in the minority.

There are still those who see CMX as butchers who should not be in the manga business
and regard what was done to TenTen as unforgivable.

I don’t know. Too much vitriol it seems.

Dear Danielle:

Thank-you for spreading the CMX love! I must admit I WAS one of the many who ignored the publisher for a long time, but now I think I’ve seen the light. They do have an eye for those diamonds in the rough (the rough being the overwhelming number of high school shoujo, *shudder*). I have finally made a commitment to see what this publisher was about, and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s too bad I had to do all the work myself (where is the driving force behind this company’s marketing?). I think that makes us feel better about reading CMX series, though, because we know we are the select few who have made a good choice not to miss out on some truly deserving series. Jump comics are fun, but don’t we all need some variety? Am I right?

PS: I’m with whoever else wanted Rose of Versailles, too!

CMX do some fantastic stuff- Eroica is just perfect madness, Cipher is entirely cast by the members of Tears for Fears and The Thomson Twins, Swan is fantastic and I have a soft spot for The Devil Does Exist (even though I see its limitations). They also publish The Young Magician, and Omekae Desu by Tanaka Meca which stars a Shinigami in a GIANT BUNNY SUIT who rides a moped. This is basically a back catalogue entirely made of WIN and which I need to own all of.

And their back catalogue is generally available which I really appreciate.

For some reason CMX reminds me a bit of Blu- they seem to be imprints which have a distinctive editorial feel to them and they are prepared to bring over some titles which won’t be immediately popular but which they consider to be such classics that they deserve to be licensed and which will still sell respectably over the long run. This is just my impression but they do seem to have an eye for the classics and use some of the profits from other titles to subsidise the titles that will build an on-going manga fan base.

The first I ever heard of CMX was during the TenTen debacle, and no, not a good first impression, but ye gods, that was years ago, people, and it was a one-time mistake. A big one, to be sure, but no bigger than the biggest mistakes made by other manga publishers, and, unlike other publishers, they don’t keep repeating it. I love CMX and their wacky catalog, and I trust their taste enough that I will at least look at every new title with their logo that I see on the bookshelves.

I think someone up there mentioned GON, which should definitely be added to the roster of “weird but awesome things CMX has brought to enrich my life.”

I love CMX’s line of books to bits — but unfortunately the translation of the first two volumes of Eroica kept tripping me up with bizarre misuses of British slang which seemed to have been learned from reading Harry Potter fanfiction. It was like nails on a blackboard! The sheer crazy awesomeness of the story carried me through it, though.

The other hassle with CMX titles is the availability outside the US.
For the most part, Diamond won’t ship their stuff overseas, which is irksome.

I’ve seen some CMX in the bookstore, but I too order mine from the comic book shop.

I personally love CMX’s variety in shojo titles, and am also waiting on Kimagure and Rose of Versailles. I’d take Oniisama E while they’re at it, too!

Hmm, I don’t think I have read anything by CMX other then tenjho tenge vol. 1. They sound somewhat interesting based on descriptions but I haven’t really heard of them before.

hi Andrew — yeah, fans of that title were seriously burned so I don’t begrudge them their anger at CMX. The nice thing about the whole mess is CMX doesn’t make that mistake anymore although they’ve taken a different approach with their mature titles lately, giving them a prestige format and a higher price ($12.99).

Kiki — great point about their lack of bookstore exposure. It is almost impossible to get most CMX manga in a bookstore — I order most of mine from the comic book shop, which works out well for *me* since DC/Wildstorm/CMX books ship when they should and I usually don’t have a problem getting them. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen Eroica or SWAN in a bookstore. It really is a miracle these books come out at all as far as I’m concerned….EMMA, though, I think can usually be found, although, not always.

After the kerfuffle with Tenjho Tenge I assumed that CMX would fold up in a few months so I quit paying attention to them. Thanks for letting us know that not only has CMX gotten its act together but they have gone nuts in an interesting way as well.

I adore From Eroica and Emma is another favorite – have also enjoyed Swan – but has anyone else had trouble finding CMX manga at their Barnes & Nobles and Waldenbooks? I have to order on-line. Once in a while I will see maybe one volume – usually the 8th or 9th of a CMX series on the shelf and that’s it. Given that most readers I know get into a series by flipping through it on the shelf, it seems a shame it doesn’t have a bigger shelf presence. Now if they’d just bring out Emperor of the Land of the Rising Sun or Rose of Versaille, I’d be a really happy shopper.

I very much respect the current group managing CMX as they seem to be doing a good job of with their catalog of mid-level titles, and I think it’s cool that they release the classic shojo titles they do. I wish we had more classic manga available in English (I’d love to finally be able to read Kimagure Orange Road…sigh…).

That said, it’s a rule every online discussion about CMX has to have at least one annoyed TenTen fan, and being one all I can say is: “CMX? Bah. Humbug. Give me uncut TenTen and all will be forgiven”

*nods* CMX is a really odd little manga company in that i don’t think people know they generally have *great* titles (they just have a LOT of shojo which means they may get overlooked). They certainly aren’t perfect (their production quality leaves a lot to be desired although I find their translations to be quite strong personally).

And, agreed about Funimation. I remember when their reputation was quite bad but FMA was done so well (among other titles, I’m sure) that they’ve really become a favorite of fans for their work.

It’s always nice to see a manga or anime company that started out with major editing issues grow up and do some great work. I’m much more into anime than manga, and this story reminds me of Funimation. Who ever thought the company responsible for DBZ’s early butchery would do such a good job on Full Metal Alchemist that I actually prefer the dub to the original?
