I would hate to see Watchmen given the joyless, ultraserious pretentious treatment of The Dark Knight movie.

You have to be kidding me.

That's just ridiculous.

T: Snyder seems to have a good deal of respect for the material, but statements like that make it sound like he’s being too flippant about it. I don’t want it to be a sacred cow, and I might not even see the movie, but Moore does bring up some important concepts in the comic, and it’s far deeper than the statement that Snyder made.

Actually, that encourages me. It seems we're headed into a time where the pendulum has gone too far in the opposite direction of the days when the mainstream didn't take comics seriously enough to our current age where people are taking them too seriously. I mean some of the interviews with the creators and actors of The Dark Knight would have you thinking they were filming a Dostoevsky or Shakespeare adaptation. People are so desperate to sell superhero comics as "capital A" art that they've sucked all the fun out of them and made them joyless. I would hate to see Watchmen given the joyless, ultraserious pretentious treatment of The Dark Knight movie. As a teenager, as much as I enjoyed the grand themes of Watchmen, a major selling point for many of us and the stuff that had me and my friends buzzing the most about the book afterschool were the "kewl" scenes of things blowing up and people getting beat up and Rorsharch's badass threats to the other prisoners. Now that we're all in our 30s and up, we forget or downplay the visceral thrills the "kewl" colorful parts of the book gave us when we were younger and try to act like it's James Joyce's Ulysses with some capes thrown in because we now feel that we NEED the book to be high art with a capital A in order to validate us and justify our still being obsessed with superhero books at this advanced age. I'm glad Snyder remembers the parts of the book that appealed to us so much on a visceral teenage level.

Dan: Lauren had quite a few books on her table. The aisle on her right there was crammed with people and very narrow, so I didn't venture back there, but I'm sure if you e-mail her she'll let you know about them!

Lauren Weinstein looks exactly like the cover of Girl Stories (check it out, it's an amazing book! Amazon has it starting at 99 cents). Goddess of War is (so far) a wonderful read. It's very engaging and evocative--the kind of book that brings out a jumble of emotions at once. I've found myself laughing out loud at some panels without a clear idea why. What's that on her table? Are there more books she's done? I want to read them!

That leaves #8, 9, 13, and 18!

T: Snyder seems to have a good deal of respect for the material, but statements like that make it sound like he's being too flippant about it. I don't want it to be a sacred cow, and I might not even see the movie, but Moore does bring up some important concepts in the comic, and it's far deeper than the statement that Snyder made.

That being said, it's his movie, and he can do whatever he wants. I'll just read the comic!

Despite the fact that this is an apt description, the fact that Zack Snyder describes his latest film thusly - “In my movie, Superman doesn’t care about humanity, Batman can’t get it up, and the bad guy wants world peace” - does not fill me with confidence.

Why not? Seriously.
