I think the point is it is an optical illusion. It appears to be rising (or falling) but it is really going nowhere.

I was just wondering, then Funky kind of answered it for me: Is that an image of the industry climbing to greater and greater heights? Or is it an image of the industry sinking to lower and lower depths? Maybe it all depends on if your staircase is half full or half empty of fanboys.

The image is kind of accurate, but somehow the industry gets lower and lower every time it does a lap.
