hi Jun! I completely adore that "old school" vibe you talk about, probably because those comics always seem so much more intelligent than a lot of manga i come across (perhaps because it feels as though the creator isn't talking *down* to the reader, or perhaps because shojo has gotten a little dumbed down the past few years.)

Thanks muchly for the rec on Do Whatever You Want. Netcomics certainly has some very interesting series (many with a kind of old-school feel that I like), but I hadn't paid attention to that one previously.

Yeah, I think mostly I shy away from shrink-wrapped material for two reasons: 1) I can't browse the book to see if its at all something I'd enjoy; 2) I can't browse the book to see if it's so quote-unquote mature that I'd rather not own it (I have high school age kids coming over to our house every week and I'd rather not have to deal with parental backlash for having anything remotely hentai-y on a shelf they could get to).

Of course, I'd rather stay away from Checkout Line Perv status if it can be avoided too. I did buy a couple volumes of Negima while they were still being shrink-wrapped, but I already new the material was "safe"—for the most part. The funny thing is that some stuff gets wrapped and some doesn't. I browsed through a volume of Ai Yori Aoshi—since my wife and I found the love story parts of the anime to be rather endearing—and was blown away by how much more explicit the art was in comparison to Negima, which was shrink-wrapped. For that matter Blankets and any number of non-digest-sized mature comics don't get the shrink wrapping. I'm not sure what the lesson is there but I'm sure I learned it.

Yeah, I work in a comic book store and right now DC and Marvel tend to shrink wrap all their hard-covers so shrink-wrap is becoming less and less a test of how "mature" a title might be (although right now only mature rated manga tend to get the shrink wrap in the U.S.)

Shrinkwrapping doesn't bother me either. I used to work in a bookstore and all sorts of non-"adult" books get shrinkwrapped too, so that's not necessarily indicative of its content.

The only time I felt slightly embarrased was when I bought a volume of TOKYOPOP's original release of Sorcerer Hunters that had a picture of the two sisters in S&M gear on the cover. The clerk didn't say anything to me but gave the cover a long, hard look before just rolling their eyes... :D

hi Dane! As someone who buys yaoi in the bookstore (that's the one with male/male relationships, usually marked by covers of two men embracing) I've gotten used to looking like a perv. I haven't embraced it yet, but one of these days I might just have to....

By the way, Suppli isn't even all that graphic, to be honest, and probably doesn't even deserve shrink-wrap...particularly if has kept readers from trying it out, like you!

We saw Suppli in the bookstore and was impressed with the cover art but the shink-wrapping was a bit of a turn-off. (Who wants to take a covered book up to checkout and look like comic pervs?) Glad to hear it's a good series—maybe we'll go ahead and try it out.
