[...] Comic Book Resources If you missed the first Atomic Robo series, you can still pick up the trade (it’s quite good), plus you can get the brand new mini-series. Come on! Robots! Versus Nazis! Who also have robots! Can it go wrong? Well, I’ll start by pointing out that Wegener’s art has gotten a lot better in this series. It was decent in the first series, but it’s more detailed and more realistic in this issue without losing the sense of goofy fun from the original run. The issue features the invasion of Sicily by the Allies in World War II, and the war scenes are excellently rendered. [...]

Although, really, the only writer who could’ve plausibly taken the book over would have been Larry Hama.

Or John Ostrander.

My only guess on Checkmate is that DC is contractually obligated to give Jones (x) amount of work in a year, and they figured that they might as well burn those on a dead title than on something they might actually want to keep around (having, presumably, learned their lesson from the Nightwing debacle).

Captain Britain is all aces. My goodness. Chills all over. Especially during Brian's mission statement speech at the end.
This book seems to specialize in EVERYthing, from dialogue to action to character work to emotional uplift.
And I think we all knew what was going to happen with Faiza, but it was still a powerful moment.

Suzene: I didn't get into Firebreather when it first came out, and it just dropped off my radar. I like Hester and Kuhn, so it's probably something I should check out. And I know what you mean about Horn.

Thanks for the reminder, Tim. I swear, it's been at least 15 years since I read that, and I remember the freaky scenes at school and the scenes in Europe, but I forgot about the cathedral.

As for the dialogue ... well, I'm fairly sure that the cop was a bit of a joke, but it's not funny. Anyway, that's just an example from this issue, which doesn't have many of them. The dialogue between Bruce and Jezebel, for instance, is kind of painful, and I don't think it's supposed to be!

The whole plot of Batman: Gothic revolves around creating a super-powered evil cathedral that will divert the souls of everyone in Gotham City to the Devil. That's some supernatural architecture we're talking about!

Dark Knight, Dark City (which is brilliant) came out just as Gothic was concluding.

And don't you read the cliche dialogue as kind of a joke? Like the guy says the cliche dialogue about his wife and kid, and, sure enough, he gets stabbed through the head on the next page. It's funny, right? Sort of?

No 'Fire Breather'? You cad! The back-up alone was worth the cover price.

'Elephantmen' pretty much has me on edge right now. I loathe Horn, but if anything happens to him, I'm gonna cry -- he's my favorite antagonist in all of comics.

Dan: I like a lot of post-MacGowan Pogues, but I don't think, overall, it quite measures up. It's better than people think, though.

I'll let you know if I see Helen Killer in Previews, Bill. It's the least I can do!

I was gonna bypass "Golly!" (didn't realize it was Hester), but your review has me intrigued. As for Checkmate, what a sad end for what was once a great book.

Amerika v 6.0 (The Best We Can Do) -- I was supposed to see Steve Earle last weekend (for free!) but circumstances said otherwise. But it did give me an opportunity for a three-day Earle-a-thon.

Shame on me for not paying much attention to last week's lyrics. I regard Waiting for Herb as a *stupendous* album, far better than anything the Pogues ever did with Shane, which I know is rankest heresy. (For that matter, my fave stuff than Shane ever did was with his post-Pogues outfit, the Popes ... so I guess I'm at least consistent, or something.)

A world in which that album's Tuesday Morning was not a major, major hit is a world that, I'm afraid, is not really worth living in. I do try to soldier on, though.
