Art Identification Game!

Who drew this picture of Black Crow from Marvel’s The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Vol. III (Master Edition) #28 (click on the image to enlarge)?

On another note, does anyone know who was ghosting for Joe Shuster on the Superman comic strip at the end of 1942?

I’m positive I’m wrong, but something about the face makes me think John Byrne.

There definitely is a Byrne feel to it, but I dunno if that is because is IS Byrne or if it just because it is in the same style of Byrne.

Keith Pollard. He drew all the turnarounds for that particular series.

PS- If I recall correctly, Joe Rubenstein inked all of them as well.

Joel’s correct. Keith Pollard penciled the turnarounds, and Joe Rubinstein inked them.

Cool.

Thanks, guys!

Where is good ol’ Keith nowadays? I miss seeing his stuff.

Is that Judge Dredd gone native?
(Sorry DC/brit comic guy)

Nice call, DMS.
Didn’t think that.

Man, Judge Black Crow is SUCH a better character.

And I thought it was Black Knight 1602!

This site is always a great resource to check if you have any questions about the early Superman or Batman artists.

A number of artists were ghosting back in ’42, so if you’re trying to identify a specific story try comparing the art to the samples on the website.

Thanks, Anonymous, yeah, I had narrowed it down to a couple of guys, but I just couldn’t tell for sure, so I was hoping perhaps just one fellow was drawing the strip the last couple of months of ’42.

thats john byrne? hes been at the gym!

That Superman artists site is a trip. Great Batman section too… for mature fans.

Keith recently started accepting commissions, and he’s made a couple of appearances at cons in the Mid-Atlantic area. You can see samples of his recent work (including a commission he did for me) here:
