This is what good "pimping" looks like....

Do we use the word "pimping" on this side of comic book fandom?  For me that word indicates the action of posting about a specific title (be it book, manga, television show or film) as to entice all your friends to jump on the love-bandwagon for whatever media you happen to be crazy about at this particular moment.

Melinda has written a beautiful post explaining why we should all be reading xxxholic here.  She has plot breakdown, character descriptions, relationship configurations and oh yes.  Lots and lots of pretty art.

xxxholic is hands down CLAMP's most mature and moving work they've created in their twenty-year-or-so-long career.  Go let Melinda tell you why.

After you've read all 12 volumes released by Del Rey in the states, come back and give me a 5,000 word essay explaining Doumeki and Watanuki's relationship.  I'll be waiting.

Thank you for the kind words!

I do indeed use the word "pimping" in reference to telling people about good comics.

That'll be a "no" on the essay, though.

A no on the essay as well, but definitely think xxxHolic is an amazing series. It is very beautifully illustrated and well written, and I found myself very moved by Watanuki and Yuko's relationship in the last volume. It's killing me we have to wait until MARCH of next year for volume 13...

xxxHolic is very, very good but I don't think you could explain the relationship between Watanuki and Doumeki in only 5,000 words. You can't explain any kind of relationship in a CLAMP story in only 5,000 words.

The first 4 volumes of the anime series can tide you over until March, and the next volume comes out in September. (Buying 4 episodes per disk does get expensive, I admit).

My sole complaint about Xxxholic is that as the storyline progresses, you're more dependent on knowing what happens in the Tsubasa series. Tsubasa is a fun series but I'm reluctant to spend my hard earned cash on it like I do for Xxxholic. The story lines just aren't as enticing for me (and I do know about the big changes in the last few volumes) and the artwork doesn't draw me in like Xxxholic (we're talking stylistic choices here, the art in both is excellent).

hmmm....I give out my first assignment and its rejected! Teacher is not pleased.... ;-)

Melinda -- thanks for stopping by and also for sharing your lovely essay!

Andrew -- blerg. I didn't know we wouldn't see 13 until next year.

Kevin -- 10,000 words?

El Dustino -- I've avoided the anime mainly because Watanuki's voice (be it in the dub or sub) really, really annoys me. I find I enjoy him much better on flat paper!
And I've kind of given in on the whole "Tsubasa" aspect so much I've learned to embrace that series even if half the time I can't figure out what is going on there.....

Kevin - 2 words: "special person". It's a major recurring trait in CLAMP's manga, one person finding their other "special person" regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation etc - and no further explanation given. One thing I'm scared of is that we'll reach the end of HOLiC, and CLAMP ...leave it at those two words If there's one manga that I'm totally, overwhelmingly in love with,t hen it's this one, and I *need to know details*.

The most recent chapters are getting my hopes up on that point.

XXX-holic is a great series, although I was pretty annoyed at the Tsubasa cross-over in the last volume since the Tsubasa volumes it referenced hadn't actually been releeased yet. That was annoying. For me Tsubasa is getting pulled along by that XX-holic connection although it was picking up some lately (it took long enough.

If it makes you feel any better, Danielle, the xxxHolic novel, AnotherHolic is due out in November from Del Rey. So there's something, I guess...

hi Andrew -- yes, I'm very excited about that! I'm getting a "sneak preview" of the holic novel since a fifty page or so page excerpt was included in the "Faust" the Japanese fiction anthology just released this week! So far I haven't gotten over the weirdness of following Watanuki through his pov-texually as opposed to visually....
