Very cute!

When my (now 3 1/2 year-old) son Connor was 2, he pulled an Essential Wolverine volume off the shelf, and wanted me to read it to him. He was delighted by the story of "the scary Woh-va-reen" hanging out with his friends and dancing, and laughed when they broke the wall. Good thing those Essential volumes are in black and white.

Last Father's Day, he wanted to get me a comic book. My wife took him to the store, and he took a long time to decide which one I would like. He was quite proud of himself when he gave me that issue of All-Star Batman & Robin.

On another note, it's sort of affected what and how I buy. No matter how well I hide them, he's going to find that issue of Action comics with Lightning Lad swearing and blood all over Earth Man's face. Why? Because it's a comic book (and one with the LSH too, and he liked the cartoon plenty). He isn't actively aiming for the TPBs yet, so there's been more of a switch towards that for me.

Blackjak: So far, the only comics she has sought on her own are my comic shop's long shelf of Archie digests. She just like to look at the pretty pictures. She does like to wander around and look at all the covers, but she hasn't gravitated toward anything. She actually doesn't watch superhero cartoons yet, because my wife tends to buy her DVDs and she gets Disney stuff. I have to go get her some superhero DVDs. We try to keep her from watching kids' television shows, so she hasn't discovered all the DC stuff on television yet. The problem I've noticed with reading comics to her (as opposed to books with pictures) is that so many comics have the action integrated into the story, so if you just read the words, you miss some things. But she likes picture books a lot, so as she starts to learn to read (right now she just memorizes entire books without really reading them), I'll start asking her what comics she wants.

Brian: That's a weird video. Burgas is a town in Bulgaria (I think - maybe Romania?), so it comes up occasionally as "related."

I am finding the balance between reading comics and reading prose to the six year old to be tricky.

Granted, part of that is my fault.

It seemed like a great idea to read him Bone. I didn't count in my head just how many months it would take us to get through it.

My three-year-old loves "HUKK!" I take him with me on my monthly comic-book run now... A couple of months back, without any prompting, he went straight over and grabbed the Giant-sized Hulk and Hulk #2 - "This one's green Hukk, this one's red Hukk... Daddy, why's he red?"

Now, he's been reading (having read to him) the Marvel Adventures Hulk Digests (brilliant size for him too!) but I'd never mentioned Red Hulk to him.. I hadn't been getting it. He just knew... He also really likes Spider-Man (though strangely not as keen on the junior-styled Spider-Man and Friends comic/magazine).

He can spot Batman and Captain America, but his favourite is "RedMan"... who eh first saw on teh cover of Astro City - He thinks the Samaritan is the coolest... He will even point a pictures of Superman and say "That's not Red Man! Silly Blue Man, that's not right!"

He has also just discovered Sonic the Hedgehog in Digest form, but I don't think he's as keen as he thought he would be... The content isn't shaded in 3D-style like the cover is... Which is what he likes... "Super-Hedgehog!"

What I love about kids this age is that they can tell when they're being patronised... They don't want what *we* want them to want... They want what we like... Which is also why I stopped reading Hellblazer... Found him looking at a copy when he was one... The issue where John is in Hell, negotiating with his "offspring"... I'm an awful lot more careful what gets left around now...

Does Miss Burgas read comics (or have them read to her)? Or does she just enjoy the cartoons?

I'm really interested to find out what the kids themselves think, not what adults *think* kids should be thinking and/or liking...
