A Month of Art Stars – Colleen Coover
Every day this month I’m going to feature a current comic book art “star,” someone whose work I absolutely love.
I’m mostly going to try to keep from the biggest names as much as possible, because, really, do I need to talk more about the awesomeness of JH Williams, Frank Quitely and Darwyn Cooke? Here‘s the archive of the artists mentioned so far!
Here’s one of the funnest comic artists working today!
Enjoy!
Amusingly enough, Coover, whose art is some of the cutest darn stuff you’ll see, got her comic book start drawing Small Favors, an erotic comic book for Eros.
Even then, though, both her style and sense of fun was evident…

Those are some sweet and well laid out comic book covers. I especially enjoy the middle cover – Coover designed that cover beautifully.
Since then, Coover has MOSTLY dealt in more G-Rated areas (although not fully
, beginning with her Oni comic book, Banana Sundays.
)
More recently, Coover has become noticed a lot for her Marvel Comics work, both on Power Pack and especially in the pages of X-Men First Class, where she does great short stories…

Really, though, it is nuts how effortless she makes these drawings look – it is quite striking how cool her artwork is, especially how she manages to mix themes without sacrificing style – note how her fun drawings work just as well as her poignant ones…

For more examples of Coover’s greatness, check out her website here, which is where I got these drawings (most of which I used in a Snark Free Corner awhile back).

I like the middle cover too. (small favors # 4)
Sexy, even though it’s cartoon-ish.

I think Colleen Coover is nine million varieties of awesome. Easily my favourite new artist working in comics today and I have to thank Brian for the introduction to her work. I hope she gets better notice in the big two– I would love to see her do Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family (the original version) one day, or The Spirit. But I love all her work, though her indie stuff is hard to find!

oh I love her! I even noticed her work because we do have a small porn section in my shop and I couldn’t help notice her girl-on-girl stuff looks so different than most of what is out there…much more of a female-friendly aesthetic (if there is such a thing?) in her porn.

Ha! I didn’t know she was working for Marvel! That’s cool.
(And I’m so glad you published the Small Favors covers. I looked at the title and said “This post BETTER have some porn in it.)

It’s impressive how her style is adaptable to such a spectrum of material, from her G-Rated Marvel back-up strips to her erotica ( which, as Danielle noticed, looks much more distinct and much less unsettling than you’d expect an 18+ comic sold in the darkest corridors of the direct market store to look like ).

I love her style. She and Jeff Parker need to get a regular title going.

I love Coover’s art. The backup stories she draws for FIRST CLASS are so lovely.

Seriously Mr. Cronin, every single entry on your Month of Art Stars feature clearly deserves their title, even though I didn’t recognise most names. Thanks for the enlightment!!

All porn should be as cute as Small Favors.
